Karen,Judy and I were back in the classroom after lunch. All of the other students were still outside. t4Look what I have found ,” said Karen, holding up a box filled with short pieces of chalk in every 1 of the rainbow. “Wow!What fun it would be to write on the chalkboard while 2 is outside”’ Judy said.

“But Mrs Eiffler doesn’t allow writing on the chalkboard”’ I said, already feeling guilty (有罪恶感的) 3 we had not yet done a thing.

“Don’t be afraidJanet. No one will ever know,” said Karen, reaching into the box and 4 out a piece of chalk.

“Right, and we’re 5 . No one will tell on us. Judy was already drawing a house.

I finally 6 my friends in the artwork, wanting to be part of what was going on,but afraid of being

caught. I knew well that we were 7 not one,but two class rules. The second rule was that no one was allowed to stay inside at noon without a written excuse from home if the weather was nice.

Trying different colours,we drew houses, trees and other things. It was fun!All the time we were 8 the clock, knowing that our fun would be over if anyone walked into the room.

“We’d better get this board cleaned off before Mrs Eiffler comes back ,” said Judy. Finally, everything came off …but my name!

In disbelief,I looked at the chalk in my hand. On closer 9 ,it wasn’t chalk at all,but a piece of white colour crayon mixed in with the chalk.

After cleaning the board,my name came off all right, but while removing it,we 10 an abrasion (磨损) on the chalkboard.

We were just sitting at our desks as the bell rang and the other students began entering the room. Mrs Eiffler 11 asked about the abrasion and maybe never noticed it. But I did. Every time I walked past the chalkboard,I remembered.

The lesson I learned that day is one Til never forget, even though over forty years have passed since the event. “No one will ever know” is never true. Even if no one else 12 ,God knows and I know. Sometimes

living with a guilty conscience (良心) is punishment enough.

           B

     (2015 •北京门头沟一模)

Last week,my granddaughter started kindergarten (幼儿园) ,and certainly I wished her success. I was saying something that was not true. What I actually wish for her is failure. I believe in the importance of failure.

Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do,or do something correctly the first time, which can often be a problem for the future. First-time success is usually a fluke (饶幸) .First-time failure,in fact,is the natural order of things.

Failure means how we learn. I have been told of an African phrase (短语) describing a good cook as “she who has broken many bowls^. If youVe spent enough time in the kitchen and have broken a lot of bowls, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much their failures gave them.

My younger daughter is a dancer. She spent three years getting ready for an act. She did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change the act — but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored; and if she was bored, she couldn’t play well. So she changed the act. She risked failure in order to feed her heart.

My granddaughter is a perfectionist. But I will also,I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do whatever it is better next time. I probably won’t tell her that failure is a good thing, because that's not a lesson she can learn when she is five. I hope I can tell her, though, that it?s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck,it is the beginning.

6. What did the writer really wish for her granddaughter in the kindergarten?

   A. Success. B. Failure. C. Kindness. D. Care.

7. The third paragraph mainly tells us .

   A. what “a good cook” means   B. a cook should often cook

   C. a cook must break many bowls   D. failure means how we learn

8. Why did the younger daughter change the act?

   A. Because she didn't do well in it.

   B. Because she was asked to change it.

   C. Because she wanted to feed her heart.

   D. Because she wanted to try a failure.

9. What does the writer hope to tell the granddaughter?

   A. Failure is a good thing.

   B. She can't fail any more.

   C. Failure is not the end of the world.

   D. Success is the end of the world.
