Many people think self-confidence is the key to a happy, successful life. But where does self-confidence come from? 1. .
I’m Lucy. Self-confidence means that I can do something well. It’s even better if someone else tells you that you’re good at something, too. When people listen to me and pa
y attention to my ideas, I know they like me. When people don’t listen, I sometimes feel sad. 2. .
I’m Jeff. Respect from my family and friends makes me feel the best. I don’t care if I’m the best football player, or I don’t get the highest grade on a test, or don’t succeed at everything I do. 3. . If someone says something unkind about you, you don’t mind that much because you know they’re wrong—that means you have self-confidence.
I’m Sue. I really feel good when my mum gives me a hug and says,“Have a nice day!”before I leave the house. Also, one day in a store I asked a salesman where to find something, and to my surprise, he said,“You have a beautiful smile.” For the rest of the day I was happy. These kinds of things have to come naturally and from

Are you aged between 14 and 19 years old? Do you care about the environment around you? Would you please help make the area you live in cleaner and safer?
If your answers are “yes”, “yes” and “yes”, then read on! You may be surprised to hear that you can actually (事实上) get money for improving your community (社区).
The “Big Lottery” is giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens(公民). We have £80,000 to give away. We’re looking for young people to take part in schemes (规划) and projects near to the places they live in.
Here are some easy things you could do to get started:
Meeting the neighbors
Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they need to improve in your areas. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go around to their houses, you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch
Neighborhood watch schemes are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. You could set one up easily and quickly.
Lending a hand
There are elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens or walk their dogs!
No littering
Nobody likes picking up rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take it in turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Recycling
Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas already provide places for people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper
. Find out if this is done in your neighborhood. If it is not, do something about it.
So go on…help make your neighborhood “street ahead”. Just tell us what kind of project you want to get involved in. Then we’ll send you more details. Take positive (积极的) action and help make your neighborhood a better place to live in!
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why we should care about the elderly people in our community.
B. What we can do to improve the environment of our community.
C. How we can recycle daily rubbi
sh properly in our community.
D. When we should get the neighbors together to meet their needs.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer doesn’t agree to work for the “street ahead”.
B. Teenagers aged from 14 to 19 are not allowed to join in.
C. It is hard to find a neighbor to watch your house in the UK.
D. We will get money if we give any help in our community.
3.What can you infer from the passage?
A. The center for elderly people will be larger.
B. The writer is a member of the “Big Lottery”.
C. Communities will take the place of schools.
D. The writer is the manager of the community.

We’ve all heard of mermaids. They are the beautiful half-human, half-fish creatures(生物). They have the head and body of a human and the tail of a fish. We also know that mermaids only exist in fairy tales. But where did all the stories about these creatures come from? If you have ever seen a manatee, then you might have an idea.
![]()
Manatees, which are also called sea cows, are mammals(哺乳动物) that live in the sea. Since they are mammals, they have to swim up to the surface to breathe air. Many people believe that the story of the mermaid began with the ancient sailors who saw the manatees putting their heads out of the water to breathe. Because manatees are upright when they do this, it looks like they are standing. If a sailor saw a manatee doing this from far away across the sea, it is possible that the sailor would mistake the manatee for a creature that is half-human, half-fish.
Mermaids are described as having very long hair. This is probably because manatees like to swim up to the surface of the water in areas where there is sea grass. Manatees eat all kinds of plants in the sea, including sea grass. The sea grass around the manatee’s head when they eat could create a picture of long hair.
![]()
Manatees also have powerful tails that are very similar to the fish-like tail of a mermaid. The sailors probably watched manatees come up for air and then swim back below the surface, using their paddle-shaped tails. This would explain why the sailors thought mermaids had fish-like tails.
1.What are mermaids?
2.Where do manatees live?
3.Do manatees need to breathe air out of water?
4.What do manatees eat?
5.Why did the ancient sailors mistake manatees for mermaids?
