    What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape a fire? Do you know how to save your life? Please read the following passage.

    Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can keep you safe or even save your life. It is important to know the ways to escape(逃脱) a fire. When a fire happens, we can use the stairways, windows or fire escapes, but not lifts.

    Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may go into the room. Keep our head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke.

    If a friend helps us, it’s a good idea to write him a thank-you note. But in fact, how many of us sit down to do this? “People don’ t seem to walk around giving thanks to people quite often,” Professor Kumar said. Why don’t people like to send thank-you notes? And how do people feel when they get one?

    Kumar and his team asked some students to write a thank-you note to another person by email. Then, they asked both the writer and the receiver how sending or getting these notes made them feel. Here is the result.

    They found that these writers didn’t like to write the notes because they felt like they had to think too much about them. They worried about what to say and how to say it. The receivers, however felt enjoyable when they got the notes. When you are a receiver, you really care about the warmth of the note, “Kumar says. “How friendly and warm was it?”

    Also, the writers didn’t like to write the notes because they thought it might be awkward (尴尬的) for the receiver to get a thank-you note. But in fact, it’s not true. “They feel quite happy,” Kumar says. “They don’t really feel awkward at all.” If people knew that writing a thank-you note could be so important to others, they would do it more often, Kumar says.

    In a word, simple and small changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference in how we treat (对待) other people and how we feel.
