My friend Henry has a most unusual hobby. He likes planting flowers in strange places. When spring comes around, you can always be told that Henry has been somewhere because the dirty sides of canals, land covered with rubbish, and railway banks suddenly become full of flowers. In Henry's spare time, with pockets full of seeds,he goes round on his bicycle. He has a long pipe with him to blow seeds into spots that are hard to reach. When his flowers fade (凋谢) ,he goes around again to collect their seeds. In this way he always has a big supply.

Many people make fun of Henry, but he never lets himself get upset. Recently I often had tea with him and he told me that once he was planting seeds in a large piece of waste land, the owner came along and sent him away. Henry returned some days later when there was no one around. You can imagine how surprised the owner was when he saw a large letter "H" in flowers which went right across this neglected        (waste) piece of land!Henry took me round his house and I was astonished to see that there was only one small bunch of flowers in a pot. When I questioned him about this,he answered, "They're not fresh. They're artificial. Fresh flowers should be out there where they belong. " And he pointed out of the window to a garden full of flowers.

My mother's father worked in a church when he was young. One day,he built some boxes for some clothes. The church was sending them to an orphanage (孤儿院) in India. On his way home,he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. Then he realized what had happened:the glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the boxes. His new glasses were on the way to India!

Grandpa had spent $20 for those glasses that very morning. That was much money for him then. He was upset by the thought of having to buy another pair. "It's not fair. I've been working so hard. How can this happen to me?" he thought.

Several months later, the director of the orphanage came to the US. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported his orphanage in India,so he came to give a speech one Sunday at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. The director began by thanking the people for their kindness.

"But most of all ," he said ," I must thank you for the glasses you sent. You see,the typhoon (台风) had just swept through the orphanage, destroying everything, including my glasses. Along with not being able to see well,I had headaches every day. Then your boxes arrived. When I opened them,I found a pair of glasses lying on top."

The people in the church were confused. There were no glasses on the list. But sitting quietly in the back,my grandfather realized what his glasses had done.

An elderly (年长的,老的,渐老的) builder was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more comfortable life with his wife. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could manage.

The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The builder said yes,but at that time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He built it carelessly and used poor materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.

When the builder finished his work, the employer came to him and handed the front door key to the builder. "This is your house," he said. "My gift to you."

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house,he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built!

Think of yourself as the builder. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board,or set up a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you can live for only one day more, that day is worthy to be lived well. Life is a do-it-yourself project.
