Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring of my life. I was born, I played a lot, and then I started school. I learned many new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days: some days the sun shone, and some days it didn’t.
In my twenties, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married (结婚) and had a child. In those days, I didn’t have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard. And so, I started to get some white hairs. The summer of my life passed quickly.
Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student, and then an engineer. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly. One day I stopped working. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color and give us nice fruits.
But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Winter has come. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left, but I will enjoy them to the end.

Assertiveness is the ability to confidently express your opinions, feelings, attitudes, and rights, in a way that doesn't infringe(侵犯) the rights of others.
Many of us are taught that it is not nice to consider our own needs above those of others. If someone says or does something that we don't like, we should just be quiet and try to stay away from that person in the future.
Why is Assertiveness important?
If you don't know how to be assertive, you might experience:
?Depression - Anger, a sense of being helpless, hopeless, or of having no control over your life.
?Resentment - Anger at others for taking advantage of you.
?Frustration - Why did I allow that to happen?
Most people find it easier to be assertive in some situations than in others. This makes perfect sense. It's a lot easier to hold your ground with a stranger than with someone you love. But the more important the relationship is to you, the more important it is to be assertive. Assertive behavior leads to increased respect from others!
But before you decide to act assertively, you have to decide if you can live
with the results. Although assertive behavior usually will result in a positive
response  (积极的回应),some people might react differently.
How to be effectively(有效地) assertive:
?Use "I" statements. Keep the focus on the problem you're having. "I'd like to be able to tell my stories without interruption." instead of "You're always interrupting my stories ! "
?Use facts, not opinions. "Did you know that shirt has a hole?" instead of "You're not going out looking like THAT, are you?"
?Express ownership of your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. "I get angry when he breaks his promises. " instead of "He makes me angry. "
? Make clear and direct requirements. Don't invite the person to say no. "Will  you please?" instead of 'Would you mind...?" or "Why don't you...?"
?Keep repeating your point. Use a low level and pleasant voice. Don't try to explain yourself.
小题1:The writer probably agrees that____________.
A.you should consider others' response before you act assertively
B.you should be assertive if you want to get good marks
C.assertiveness is the ability to infringe others' rights.
D.assertive behavior will bring you bad feelings
小题2:The expression "hold yourground" probably means “_________________”
A.reach an agreement
B.insist on your point
C.keep your word
D.keep on fighting
小题3:Which of the following helps you to be effectively assertive?
A.Explaining yourself in a soft and sweet voice.
B.Expressing ownership of others' thoughts.
C.Making requirements directly and clearly.
D.Using your opinions instead of facts.

One summer vacation in my college, my roommate Ted asked to me to work on his father’s farm in Argentina. The idea was exciting. Then I had second thoughts. I had never been far from New England, and I had been homesick my first few weeks at college. What about the language? The more I thought about it, the more the idea worried me.
Finally, I turned down the invitation. Then I realized I had turned down something I wanted to do because I was scared and felt depressed(沮丧). That experience taught me a valuable lesson and I developed a rule for myself: do what makes you anxious(焦虑); don’t do what makes you depressed.
In my senior year, I wanted to be a writer. But my professor wanted me to teach. I hesitated. The idea of writing was much scarier than spending a summer in Argentina. Back and forth I went, making my decision, unmaking it. Suddenly I realized that every time I gave up the idea of writing, that downhearted feeling went through me.
Giving up writing really depressed me. Then I learned another lesson. To avoid the depression meant having to bear much worry and concern.
When I first began writing articles, I often interviewed big names. Before each interview I would get butterflies in the stomach. One of them was the great composer Duke Ellington. On the stage and on television, he seemed very confident. Then I learned Ellington still got stage fright(害怕). If Ellington still had anxiety attacks, how could I avoid them? I went on doing those frightening interviews. Little by little, I was even looking forward to the interviews. Where were those butterflies?
In truth, they were still there, but fewer of them. I had learned from a process psychologists(心理学家) call “extinction”. If you put an individual in an anxious situation often, finally there isn’t anything to be worried about, which brings me to a conclusion: you’ll never get rid of anxiety by avoiding the things that caused it.
The point is that the new, the different, is definitely scary. But each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you.
小题1:We can infer from the passage that the author________.
A.finds it difficult to make decision
B.has found out what causes anxiety
C.was encouraged by Duke Ellington’s stage fright
D.no longer feels anxious about new experiences
小题2:What does the word “extinction” in Paragraph 6 means?
A.a person’s loss of confidence little by little
B.the natural development of a child’s abilities
C.the inborn ability to avoid anxious situations
D.the process of losing fear by keeping facing anxiety
小题3:Which of the following opinions does the writer probably accept?
A.Anxiety can be a positive drive
B.Hesitation leads to depression.
C.Avoiding anxiety reduces depression.
D.Depression is a signal that one is growing up.
小题4:What's the best title for the passage?
A.Confidence: Key to Success
B.Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name
C.Depression: A Psychological Appearance
D.Success: A Trip Through Anxiety and Depression

Elena jogged (慢跑) with her dad in some empty lots (小块地). These out-of-the-way lots were good places to jog. But the lots were full of rocks and rubbish.
One day, Elena saw a sign on the lots. It said, “New City Park”. Elena was excited. Maybe the park would have a jogging trail (路径)! Elena told her parents about the sign.
“I read about the park in the newspaper,” said Elena’s father. “The city wants volunteers to help clean the area. Then the city will build a soccer field and a playground. But the paper didn’t mention a jogging trail.”

All the wisdom of the times, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us in books, but we must know how to make use of this treasure. The unluckiest people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.
I’m very interested in people and finding out about them. Some of the most amazing people I’ve met could only  be found in a writer’s imagination, then in his book, and then, again, in my imagination. I’ve found in books new friends and new worlds.
Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the writer’s or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.
Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate(分开的), in some way they are connected with each other. The same ideas, or related(相关的) ones, appear in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in books, but with different solutions(解决方法) according to different writings at different times. Books influence each other. They connect the past, the present and the future and have their own generations (age groups), like families. Wherever you start reading, you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas, and in the end, you not only find out about the world and the people in it, you find out about yourself, too.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on(专注于) books somebody tells you “ought” to read, you probably won’ t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time — and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t suffer during the process.
小题1:Which of the following ideas may the writer of this article agree with?
A.You will never meet amazing people in your life unless you read.
B.You think actively instead of getting facts passively(被动地)when reading.
C.You will get much delight from any book that you are told to read.
D.You can relax yourself by reading because it involves little thinking.
小题2:What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.We can often find something connected with ourselves in books.
B.Different writings at different times share the same characteristics.
C.The same problems will appear in different books with similar solutions.
D.Reading books which are written for your generation is more helpful to you.
小题3:What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this article?
A.To advise us to enjoy ourselves by reading.
B.To encourage us to make full use of libraries.
C.To encourage us to find out solutions in books.
D.To advise us to discuss books with other people.
