People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss. In the English language, there are many meanings using the word “mouth”. But some of them are not so nice.

For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest (抗议) and say “Do not bad mouth me.”

Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret(后悔) because it hurts that person’s feelings. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say, “I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.

Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend is going to say. When this happens, the friend might say, “You took the words right out of my mouth!”

Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person “was born with a silver spoon in his mouth”.

This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives “from hand to mouth”. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.

快递

Have you ever dreamed about sending a letter to yourself or your friends in the future? While express mail represents high speed, there is another type of mail appearing in China as a new business—future mail.

“The letter should be sent next ‘Mother’s Day’ and not a day earlier!” Lin Xiaofan, a senior high school student in Hefei, instructs one of the companies offering the service.

Lin Xiaofan wrote the letter to her mother in advance to express her love to her mother for next Mother’s Day.

“Offering this service makes people slow down and let them understand the meaning of ‘time’ in another way,” said Zheng Zhimin, manager at a “future mail” company in Hefei. Zheng thinks “future mail” letters are “reminders of care, friendship and love.”

While “future mail” is becoming more and more popular, some people are wondering what will happen if the postal address changes or if the company goes broken before the letters arrive.

Zheng said customers are glad to complete an acceptance form and make an assessment (评估) so they can be compensated (赔偿) if their letters or goods are lost or damaged.

Most of the business’ customers are college students and young white-collar workers. Psychologists said young Chinese might have a new way to express their feelings through this service.

“Most people put their hopes and wishes in the letter so they can experience the connection between the past and the present while they receive the letter. It can help people re-understand the meaning of ‘time’ ”, said Wang Kaiyu, a sociologist in Anhui Province.

Would you completely trust your friends if you couldn’t see anything? If you are falling, do you believe they will catch you and help you stand up? Our teacher helped us to find the answer.

Our teacher is named Morrie. One day, he said that he had a game for us to try. He divided us into two groups. One of the students from the first group, stands in front of us with his eyes closed, and then falls backwards(向后). The second group stand behind him. Before he falls on the floor, they should catch him and not let him get hurt. Most of us were uncomfortable with this. We were afraid that they wouldn’t catch us and we would hit the floor. So we didn’t move. We just stood there and laughed in embarrassment(尴尬).

Finally, one student, thin, quiet, dark-haired girl called Sarah, decided to move. She crossed her arms in front of her body, closed her eyes, and slowly fell backwards. She looked quiet but brave.

For a moment, I was sure she was going to fall on the floor. But before she hit the floor, the other students caught her, held her and finally helped her stand up.

“Whoa!!” we were all surprised, and also encouraged. The girl was happy, too. Seeing this, Morrie smiled and said to the girl, “When you close your eyes, you can’t see anything. You won’t feel safe. When you are falling, the feeling gets stronger. You are not sure whether you will hit the cold, hard floor or the warm, soft hands of your friends. But if you are brave enough to trust them, they won’t let you down.”
