When George Washington was about six years old, he received a present—a hatchet（短柄小斧）. George liked it very much. He carried it around and cut useless things. One day, in the garden, he unluckily cut a beautiful young cherry tree, a favourite of his father's. The tree died. The next morning, his father found the dead tree. He was angry and asked, “Who killed my tree?” But nobody answered him.
Just then, George came in with his hatchet.
His father asked, “George, do you know who killed that beautiful little cherry in the garden?”
George was in fear. He thought for a moment and then said, “I can't tell a lie, Pa. You know I can't tell a lie. I cut it with my hatchet.”
“Run to my arms, George. I'm so glad,” his father said. “You killed my tree, but you have told the truth, and this is more valuable（宝贵的）than a thousand trees.”
