What is the book made of? What we read books or newspapers,we hardly stop to think about the paper which is used to make them. Without this invention, our lives would be very different.
Paper is one of the most important inventions of all time. The word paper comes from the word papyrus—a grasslike plant. The Egyptians first used papyrus around the year 3000 B.C. to make a kind of paper. In A.D. 105,a Chinese man named Ts’aiLun created a new type of paper using pieces of old cloth. For centuries, people all over the world used this Chinese method(方式) to make paper. In 1838,Charles Fenerty,a Canadian man, invented a new method of papermaking using wood. Today, most of the paper we use is made from wood.
Think again about your book. Did you use paper money to buy it? If so,you can thank the Chinese. They invented paper money in the ninth century A. D. The government began using paper notes as money because there wasn’t enough copper(钢) to make coins.
Today,it’s hard to imagine life without paper. We use it to communicate in many different ways. We also use many important products that are made of paper. Take for example, toilet paper. Many believe that an American. Joseph Gayetty, invented it in 1857. Walter Alcock,an Englishman, later had the idea to put the paper on rolls. By 1907,using toilet paper was common in the United States and England.

Who wants to carry a bulky bag to school? No children. Nobody wants one shoulder to be lower than the other, and paining too. In China, most of us would think of reducing textbooks as a way out. But in a country like America, there are always more choices. A company called GoReader has created a “school bag” which is the size of a laptop (笔记本电脑), weighing about 2.5 kg. The GoReader has a color screen and can “hold” all the textbooks that a student may need, says a report in China Daily newspaper.
The company plans to work closely with the publishers (出版商)of textbooks so that these books can be provided on the Internet. All the students will have to do is to download their textbooks. Making notes and marking important parts of a lesson can be done just as lots of students have done on their textbooks before.
At present, the plan is being tested out in a university. Richard Katzmann, the owner of the company is having his creation tested at Chicago’s DePaul University, where he studied. Does that mean it’s time to say goodbye to the paper, and the smell of the black ink?

Roosegaarde, an artist and designer from Dutch has thought of a device(装置). He hopes it will make Beijing's sky clear again and help the people with masks breathe fresh air again in Beijing.
An electromagnetic field(电磁场) will pull the dirty particles in the air to the ground, and then they can be easily cleaned.
Roosegaarde says, "It's like when you have a balloon which has static electricity(静电) and your hair goes toward it. Smog happens the same way as the hair."
His workplace has reached an agreement with the Beijing government to test the technology in one of the capital's parks. Beijing's skies are regularly covered by grey smog. Serious cases of air pollution are often reported in Beijing. Roosegaarde says an indoor test has already shown it works well and he is confident of the results. With the help of a team of scientists and engineers, he is sure that the device can be worked outside.
"Beijing is a very good place to test the device because the smog in Beijing is quite low and there's not so much wind." says Roosegaarde. "We'll be able to make the air pure but the most difficult thing is to remove the smog. As a result, you can see the sun again."
Roosegaarde also reminds us that his aim is not only to give a plan to solve Beijing's dirty air pollution but also to make people pay attention to the environment problem. He adds, "This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer to do with it is clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles. " However, he hopes the project will make the citizens realize the differences between clean air and smog-filled air.

A To make smog. B. To make the air clean

A the device doesn't work well indoors
B. the people with masks can breathe fresher air

A pay attention to air pollution and solve the problem finally
