Reading Comprehension
A magnet has an attractive force on magnetic substances placed near it. The force is greatest at the poles of the magnet. The force is in the magnet itself. The force is also felt outside the magnet. The region around the magnet in which the magnetic force can be felt by a magnetic substance is called the magnetic field of the magnet. You cannot see a magnetic field but you can see what the force in a magnetic field can do.
When a bar magnet is hung freely, it comes to rest in a north-south direction. Another bar magnet hung in the same way, some distance away, will also come to rest in the same direction as the first magnet. The reason the bar magnets come to rest in a north-south direction is because of the Earth's magnetism. There is a very large magnetic field all around the Earth. The magnetic field seems to be produced by a huge magnet in the Earth, with its South Pole pointing towards the north and its North Pole pointing towards the south all the time.
The magnetic poles of the Earth are not at the same positions as the geographic poles. They are a short distance away from each other. The small angle between them is called the magnetic declination. The magnetic declination is different at different places on the Earth. It also changes slightly from year to yeas because of the changes in the Earth's magnetic field. Navigators must consider magnetic declination in their calculations.
1.When the magnetic needle of a compass is allowed to move freely, it will come to rest in line with the Earth's ________.
[ ]
2.In paragraph 1, magnet means any object that can ________ and attract small pieces of iron.
[ ]
A.produce a magnetic force
B.form a magnetic field
C.use a magnetic field
D.change magnetic substances
3.The geographic North Pole is ________ the magnetic north pole.
[ ]
A.at the same position of
B.different from
C.at the opposite position of
D.the same as
4.Magnetic compasses are used by travellers and navigators to ________ in which they are travelling.
[ ]
A.indicate the South Pole
B.indicate geographic poles
C.tell them the declination
D.tell them the direction
5.Which of the following statements is true?
[ ]
A.A magnet has an attractive force on every substance placed near it.
B.When a bar magnet is hung freely, it comes to rest in a north-south direction.
C.The magnetic poles of the Earth are at the same positions as the geographic poles.
D.The magnetic declination is same at different places on the Earth.

下面是一篇介绍海南岛的短文,请仔细阅读,然后根据短文后面的任务要求作答。 Come to Hainan for your next holiday! Hainan Island, China's second largest island, is a wonderful place for a holiday. Situated about 30 kilometres from the southern coast of the mainland, Hainan is almost the same latitude as Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, and is often called "the oriental Hawaii". With its mild climate (气候) and favourable environment, it is a magnet for tourists and also a very nice place to live. Local people call it "the long life island"! Haikou City, the capital, and Sanya are the most popular tourist destinations. Sanya is famous for its beaches, forests, mountains, caves and gardens. It has also become the favourite location of the Miss World Competition in recent years. Hainan is an ideal place to avoid the cold northern winter and the best time to visit is between November and March. In January and February, the average temperature is between 16℃ and 24℃, rising to 25℃-29℃ in July and August. You can swim almost all the year round! Hainan is a fantastic place for nature lovers. There are green mountains and amazing tropical rainforests, home to more than 80 species of animals, including more than 600 rhesus monkeys. There are 340 different species of birds, and almost 2000 kilometres of coastline, with some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia. The most exciting place to visit is Tianya-haijiao beach, to the southwest of Sanya. Tianya-haijiao means "the end of the sky and the corner of the sea". Here you will find amazing rocks, some of them five metres high. On the rocks, you will see carvings of Chinese characters, Tianya (the end of the sky), Haijiao (the corner of the sea), Nantianyizhu (a pillar stands up in the southern sky), and Haipannantian (the sea judges the southern sky). The Tianya sunrise and the Haijiao sunset are really astonishing. Ancient poets stood on the stones and looked at the blue sky and sea. Now you can do the same thing! | ||||||||||||||||

Global warming is a world problem and Monitoring (监制)it usually needs a lot of math knowledge. But Francisco and Ruby track(追踪) what climate change is doing to five different plants in Tucson, Arizona and they are only in the second grade.
“We are collecting data because the weather is changing and the plants are blooming (开花),” Ruby explained.
Many other students at Borton Primary Magnet School and Sunnyside High School in Tucson are going outdoors to be part of a new scientific action to figure out(计算)how the biological timing of the Earth is changing. It’s a research project that everyone, even a kindergartner, can join in.
The National Phenology(生物气候学)Network is calling on volunteers to help track early spring blooms and changes in animals caused by global warming. It’s called Project Budburst. When it was first open to the public last year, thousands of people joined in .
“Everyone can offer his hand by tracking the timing of flowering events or leaf-out events for plants and animals in their backyard,” said Phenology Network director Jake Weltzin.
The idea is that tracking flowers blooming —— especially lilacs(丁香)which ordinary people have helped track for many years ——is simple. The Project Budburst website gives directions on what to look for in different parts of the country.
University of Maryland professor David said it was so easy to figure out what’s blooming that a lack of special knowledge wasn’t a problem.
51. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Even Kids Can Help Monitor Global Warming.
B. People Pay More Attention to Global Warming.
C. Students Are Asked to Join Science Research Projects
D. Schools Call on Students to Take on Outdoor Activities.
52. What’s the purpose (目的)of Project Budburst?
A. To protect plants and animals from global warming.
B. To attract more students to science.
C. To remind people of the results of global warming.
D. To study the changing biological timing of the Earth.
53. People taking part in the project can get some information by _________.
A. calling network director Jake Weltzin B. visiting the Project Budburst website
C. writing to the National Phenology Network D. asking professors with phenology knowledge
54. If you join in Project Budburst, you should _____________.
A. get some special training first B. do some careful observation(观察)outdoors
C. keep some plants or animals in your backyard D. invite some other volunteers to work with you
55. The example of Francisco and Ruby is used to show that_________.
A. it is quite natural to do scientific research
B. more kids are hoping to be scientists in the future
C. primary schools are focusing on science education
D. the new project is very simple and even kids can join in it
