I spoke at a middle school in 1995. When it was over, the headmaster asked me if I would visit a student. An illness had kept him at home. He wanted to meet me, thinking I knew about overcoming (克服) difficulties and going for dreams. I agreed.

During the drive to his home, I knew he was called Matthew, a real fighter. He had a muscle disease. I spent an afternoon talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, "Why me?,, He didn't mention how he was made fun of being different. He just talked about his hope for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.

When we finished talking, I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success  and  overcoming  difficulties  than  me. He looked at it for a moment and handed it back, saying, "Rick, you are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday, when I get to the Olympics and win my gold medal, I will show it to you."

Last summer I heard from Matthew's parents. They wanted me to read a letter he wrote to me a few days before his death. Dear Rick ,

I've kept all the letters you wrote to me. I told you someday I vuas going to the Olympics to win a gold medal.I knoiv now I will never get to do that. But I know I am a champion. When I get to heaven , God will give me my gold medal , and when you get there , / will shoiv it to you.

   Thanks for loving me.

April Fool's Day is a traditional day to play jokes on others. No one knows how this

holiday began, but it was thought to begin in France.

Once, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in France and celebrations lasted until April 1st. When New Year's Day was changed from March 25 to January 1st in the mid-1560's by King Charles IX, there were some people still celebrating it on April 1st and those people were called "April Fools".

April Fool's Day is for fun only. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody will have the day off. It's simply a little funny holiday, but a holiday on which everyone must remain forever vigilant (警惕的),or he may be the next April Fool

Each country celebrates April Fool's Day differently. In France, the April Fool is called " April Fish". The French fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends' backs and when someone discovers this trick, they yell "April Fish!" In England, tricks can be played only in the morning. If a trick is played on you, you are a "noodle".

On that day you can play jokes by saying, "Your shoelace's untied !" And setting roommates' alarm clock back an hour is also a common idea.
