Once Napoleon stayed in a small inn. The next morning he went to thank the innkeeper. “You have served me well, innkeeper,” said Napoleon. “I wish to reward you. Tell me what you want.” “Sir, we want nothing,” said the innkeeper. “But will you tell us something?” “We have heard a story,” said the innkeeper. “Once during the war, the Russians rook control of a farmhouse. You were sleeping in it. You hid yourself in a pile of hay(干草)while they were looking for you. Will you tell us how you felt when they were searching for you?”
The innkeeper looked at Napoleon’s face. Napoleon looked very angry. Napoleon called two soldiers standing beside him. Then he pointed to the door. The soldiers took the innkeeper and his wife out into the yard. At the end of the yard was a wall. The innkeeper and his wife were led to the wall. The soldiers tired the innkeeper’s hands behind his back. Then his wife’s hands were tired too. Napoleon watched, saying nothing. “Please, please sir,” begged the innkeeper. “Don’t kill us! We meant nothing!” the soldiers moved back. The innkeeper saw them raising their guns. Then Napoleon spoke, “Ready!” He called, “Aim!” The innkeeper’s wife screamed. “Stop!” said Napoleon. There is an old saying that all of us are born with two bags hung on our necks. A small bag in front of our chest is filled up with other people's faults (过错), while the big one at the back is full of our own shortcomings (短处).
So it’s easy to find other people's faults, but it's hard for us to see our faults behind us.
There was a boy, Tommy, who always opened the front bag to check what was in it. He saw other people's faults very quickly. When Simon was impatient with him, he said to Simon, "It's so easy for you to get angry. It is hard to be friends with you."
He told his mother about Jack's dishonesty. “Jack takes my things without asking. He also forgets to return them.” Tommy himself did not like sharing his things with anyone.
When Johnny was too tired to play with him, he said, "'You are such a rude person."
He thought Harry was too proud of his rich parents. But Tommy was proud of himself because he could not see any of his own shortcomings! He could not understand why he did not get on well with others.
If only Tommy would switch the bags around, he would discover his own impatience, dishonesty, bad manners and vanity (虚荣), which were no better than that of Simon, Jack, Johnny or Harry.
( ) 1. Tommy thought it was hard to be friends wit h Simon because Simon was ________.
A. impatient B. a rude person C. dishonest D. too proud of his rich parents
