The class teacher thought that hobbies (嗜好) were very important for every child. She hoped that all her pupils would have one, and sometimes she arranged (安排) for their parents to come and see the work they had done as a result.
One Friday morning the teacher told the class that those who had a hobby could have a holiday that afternoon to get the things they had made as parts of their hobbies ready for their parents to see the following afternoon.
So on Friday afternoon, while those of the pupils who had nothing to show did their usual lessons, the lucky ones who had made something were agreed to go home, but they had to return before five o'clock to bring what they were going to show, and to arrange it.
When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. She found it difficult to believe (相信) that he had a hobby. However (可是), at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection (收集) of butterflies (蝴蝶) in glass boxes. After his teacher had helped him to arrange them on a table in the classroom, she was surprised to see Tommy pick them up again and began to leave.
“What are you doing, Tommy?”she asked, “Those things must be here until tomorrow afternoon. That's when the parents are coming to see them.”
“I know they are coming then,” answered Tommy, “and will bring them back tomorrow, but my big brother does not want them to be out of the house at night because they might be stolen (偷).”
“But what has it got to do with your big brother?”asked the teacher. “Aren't the butterflies yours?”
“No,” answered Tommy. “They are his.”
“But Tommy, you are asked to show your own hobby here, not somebody else!”said the teacher.
“I know that,”answered Tommy, “My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.”

Long, long ago the Mouse King had a beautiful daughter. When she was old enough to be married, he called together the oldest and cleverest mice to talk about it.
“My daughter,” He said, “is far too beautiful to marry just anybody. I have decided to marry her to the greatest thing in the world. Now, who shall it be?”
“The sun,” the first mouse said at once, “is the greatest thing in the world. It shines over the whole world.”
“Well, then, I shall marry her to the sun,” said the Mouse King.
“But,” said the second, “a cloud can cover the sun.”
“Then, she must be married to the cloud.”
“But,” said the third, “the rain breaks through the clouds and puts an end to them.”
“That is true. I must marry her to the rain.”
“But,” cried the fourth, “no matter how hard the rain falls, it cannot wash away the trees.”
“Then she must be the tree's wife.”
“But,” shouted the fifth, “a strong wind can blow down the trees.”
“Very true. Then the wind must be her husband.”
“But,” remembered the sixth, “no matter how hard the wind blows, it cannot blow away the earth.”
“Then I must marry her to the earth.”
“But,” called out the seventh, “the earth is covered by the wooden floors of men's houses.”
“Then she shall marry the wooden floor at once.”
“But,” the last said slowly, “no matter how strong the wooden floor is, a mouse can bite his way through it.”
“It is clear that a mouse is the greatest thing in the world,” the happy Mouse King said, with a smile on his face.
