If you read a clock, you can know the time of day. But how did the early people know about the time?
We cannot see or hear time. We know it only when it’s passing. We know it has passed only when something 1 . In the real world, changes never stop. Some changes happen only once 2 others happen again and again.
In early human history, people found that the changes of “light and darkness” seemed to 3 again and again. The sun rises in the east, producing 4 and goes down in the west, causing darkness. This “light and darkness” was the first “time” for the early humans. We now call it one day.
People also saw the sun rise in the sky, sometimes 5 but sometimes lower. They counted the days that passed from the sun’s highest position (位置) until it returned to that position. That was three hundred and sixty-five days. That’s just one year.
Early humans also noticed changes of the moon. 6 used the changing faces of the moon to tell time. The moon was “full” when its face was bright and round. The early humans counted how many times the sun appeared 7 full moons. They learned that this number always remained the same ---about twenty-nine. Twenty-nine suns equaled (等于) one moon. We now know this is one 8 .
In this way, we humans get the time of day, month, year and so on.

I cycle to work almost every day, but I have to admit that I sometimes take the car in bad weather. Now I share an office with Jimmy who lives near to me. He drives to work every day and, quite often, at the end of the day, he drives to a gym. I don’t see the logic(逻辑). It’s much easier to cycle to work so that you have some exercise as part of your daily routine.
I wanted to persuade(劝说) him to cycle to work, so I did some research on a few websites about the benefits of cycling to work. Cycling has some obvious(明显的) advantages over driving. It is cheaper, it is better for the environment, and you don’t have to find a parking space. The point about the parking space is an important one as the car park behind our office building is often full. I know that my colleagues(同事) usually spend nearly half an hour looking for a parking space! It is true that cycling is a little slower than going by car, but at the rush hour it doesn’t make much difference. The time it takes to cycle is generally easier to predict than the time it takes to drive. The reason for this is that when there is heavy traffic, people on bicycles can get past, while people in cars have to wait. Strong winds affect(影响) cyclists badly though.
There are clear health benefits of cycling even if you only cycle a short distance each day. According to one expert, if you cycle regularly, you should be as fit as a person 10 years younger. As well as being good for your health, cycling can reduce stress. I certainly find that I feel better after my riding on the road. I also find that when I can’t solve a problem at work, the answer often comes to me when I am cycling. Sometimes the harder you think about a problem, the harder it is to find the solution(办法) and you actually need to concentrate less on the problem and relax the mind. Cycling can help to relax our minds.
I’m going to say to the people around me until they get on their bikes!
1. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Cycling has good points compared with driving.
B. Driving is the best way for us to make a journey.
C. The parking lot is often filled with plenty of cars.
D. Driving to work is much expensive than cycling.
2. What does the writer tell us in the third paragraph?
A. Cycling is good for our environment.
B. Cycling will appear in sports centers.
C. Cycling is sure to help us keep healthy.
D. Cycling changed Jimmy’s daily routine.
3. What does the writer write this passage for?
A. To show us it’s so good to drive to work every day.
B. To advise us how to stay young by doing exercise.
C. To tell us what we ought to do at the traffic rush hour.
D. To prove why he cycles to work instead of driving.

It is said that people usually learn from their experience and the mistakes they make in their lives. This is correct because life teaches us what is correct to do and what is not.
Let’s consider a mistake that one has made while trying to learn to drive. As a beginner, it is common to make mistakes, but after doing something wrong once, twice or three times, it is quite impossible for him to make the same mistake a fourth time. Everyone tries their best to improve their skills and they will be very pleased to notice that the improvements really happen.
On the other hand, being successful in everything, one cannot know what failure(失败) means. One would always see only the best side of things and it would be difficult for him or her to face the difficulties coming in the future. Here we can mention the fact of a very successful football player, who has known what fame (名望) is from the very beginning of his career(生涯). We have to admit(承认) that most of his luck comes from the great talent(才能) that he was born with. But some fellow players can also work to achieve the same thing because they make mistakes in their games and they learn from each mistake that they make.
In the end, we can say that one needs to make mistakes in life in order to better realize things. And at the same time, mistakes teach us how important it is to fight to achiever something we wish for in life. Of course, moments of happiness will come in return when we see the changes and improvements.
1. The writer thinks that it is ____ to make a mistake.
A. wrong B. difficult C. common D. correct
2. The writer mentions learning driving in the second paragraph to ___________.
A. tell people to face difficulties bravely
B. explain that learning is difficult
C. show that driving is a difficult skill
D. prove that success comes from failure
3.What is the writer’s attitude towards people that are always successful in everything?
A. He thinks they are lucky. B. He is bored with them.
C. He admires them. D. He believes their success is a good thing.
4. The main idea of the passage is that ____.
A. don’t make the same mistake B. mistakes can make us become clever
C. one should avoid making mistakes D. everyone makes mistake in life
