【题目】 A sign of weakness?“Sorry” is probably the most over-used word in the United Kingdom: whether they are sorry about the weather or sorry because someone else has accidently hit them. “The willingness of the English to apologize(道歉) for something they haven’t done is worthy of notice.” wrote Henry Hitchings in his aptly–titled Sorry!:

The English and their Manners.

So what about those situations when we realize that we really need to apologize to someone? Is it better to put aside your pride and say you’re sorry, or – as the American actor John Wayne put it – is apologising a sign of weakness?

“People worry that an apology may tell others that you have just done something wrong, rather than as an effort to understand the wronged party’s situation, problems, and feelings,” says Harvard Business School’s Alison Wood Brooks. But she adds, “A good apology is unlikely to have the opposite bad result, and is more likely to increase trust than not apologizing at all.”

As for how to do it, Edwin Battistella, a language expert from Southern Oregon University has the following advice: “The right way to apologize is the way your mother taught you.” Say you threw a stone at a cousin. “She’d have you go and look at them in the eye and say: ‘I’m sorry I threw the stone at you and I won’t do it again’. It’s important to name what you did wrong, to show yourself as being sorry in some way and to promise what might be different in the future,” Battistella says.

Just how many times you’ll need to repeat the apology may be different according to where you live. Wood Brooks and Harvard PhD student Grant Donnelly have collected data that suggests that, for a small mistake, the best number is a single “I’m sorry”. “If it is a big mistake, then making two apologies seems tobe the magic number for expressing empathy (同理心), getting back trust and liking,” Wood Brooks says. Ofcourse, if you’re British, you may need to double that. “A single ‘sorry’ does not count as an apology: we have to repeat it and embellish it with a lot of words, like terribly, truly etc.” says Professor Fox.

A.break downB.compare with

C.look forward toD.make more attractive

【题目】 Do you know what makes you happy or do you just think you know? At firstthese two questions look the same. If you think something makes you happythen it makes you happy. You know yourself, don't you?

Write a list of all the things that make you happy. How many of them are fun? Most of them?

Soif you spend your time doing all these fun thingsyou'll be really bappy, won't you?

Wellmaybe not. For most peoplefun isn't enough for real happiness. Paul Dolan wrote a book called Happiness by DesignHe thinks happiness comes from both pleasure and purpose. If most of the things on your list are about pleasurethat is what you think makes you happy. But you also need activities with purpose.

We usually know if something is funbut we don't know what brings meaning. We can try to find purpose in it. Some activities might be motivating because they work for the good of people and the world around us. Or what you do might help a team you're working in.

If you're a studentyour‘job' is studying and passing exams. It's easy to do well in subjects you likebut subjects you don't like are less motivating. They're not fun for youbut you have to study them so you need to find purpose. An A in a subject you hate won't help the world. But can you be part of a study team with friends? Each person can study one part until they understand it and then teach it to the rest of the group. The purpose becomes helping the team.

Go back to your list of things that make you happy. How many of them are activities that bring purpose? Can you add any? Remembersome activities might bring both pleasure and purpose.

Now you need to design a happy life. Paul Dolan believes people should‘decidedesigndo'.

First decide what brings you pleasure and/or purpose-that means your two lists. Thendon't just think about these activitiesfill your life with them. For exampleyou might love riding a bike but never have time to do it. Soride to school or the library or the shops. If you live too far awaytake your bike on the bus or train. Get off early and ride the rest of the way.

Some parts of our lives are good or bad luckbut we can still design the rest to make more happiness.

1The writer agrees that__

A.fun things bring us real happinessB.helping a team is helping ourselves

C.happiness doesn't only come from pleasure but also purposeD.only motivating activities do good for people around us

2We know from the passage that__.

A.a student needn't study a subject he doesn't likeB.fun things are usually meaningful

C.you'd better find time to ride a bike to schoolD.study in a group helps one find purpose

3The main idea of this passage is__·

A.how to design motivating activitiesB.why our lives need happiness

C.where we can find happinessD.what makes us happy and how to create a happy life
