Dear students,

Reading is not only a good habit but an enjoyable thing.

¡¾´ð°¸¡¿Dear students,

Reading is not only a good habit but an enjoyable thing.

Firstly, it's very easy to keep on reading. We can read anywhere and anytime if we want. Secondly, we may communicate with the wisemen all over the world by reading. It can open up our eyes to the outside world and bring us happiness. Thirdly, reading is useful for each of us. We can learn much knowledge from books to solve the problems we may meet every day. Since reading is so important, I'm going to read more on weekends or during the vacations.

In a word, books are our best friends and teachers. Let's enjoy reading and enjoy our life!

Do you know a kind of bird called tawny owl? Where does it come from? It comes from Finland (·ÒÀ¼). What color is it? It is brown. Are all the tawny owls brown? No. Tawny owls come in two colors: pale gray and brown. And in Finland, it often snowed in winter. Many tawny owls were pale gray. But as the Finnish (·ÒÀ¼µÄ)winters get warmer, there are more brown ones. Why is that?
The University of Helsinki team tries to study tawny owls. They find that tawny owls get the color from their parents. The gray owls could get food easily in the snow in the past. But now the winter is warmer. There is little snow so the brown owls can live well, too. The number of the owls is getting bigger.
The leader of the team, Dr Patrick Karell, said that the birds change their color to meet the weather. We are sure the weather change can do something to the animals.

Lizzie was born in 1842. She lived in a small house on a farm with her parents and two brothers. Her father and older brother worked in the fields picking cotton, and her mother and younger brother worked in the vegetable garden. Lizzie worked in the farmer¡¯s house.

The farmer didn¡¯t like Lizzie¡¯s older brother and gave him the hardest jobs. Lizzie was afraid that one day the farmer would hurt her brother, or sell him to another farmer.

Many slaves(Å«Á¥) tried to run away to the free states. But most were caught by slave catchers or tracking dogs. However some slaves found clever ways to escape(ÌÓÅÜ£©. Lizzie was one of them.

Everyday she went to the farmer¡¯s house, where she made beautiful clothes for the farmer¡¯s daughters. She was allowed to keep small pieces of left-over materials, and she stitched(·ì) these together into small patterns. Then she stitched the small patterns together to make a quilt. The patterns all had names such as ¡®Flying Geese¡¯, ¡®Bear¡¯s Paw¡¯, or ¡®Nine Patch¡¯.

That quilt was really a map. Lizzie hung it on the clothes line outside the house, and her brother and other slaves saw Lizzie¡¯s map and knew which way to go.

They also knew that Lizzie¡¯s cabin was a ¡°safety house¡± because a quilt with a sky blue square in the middle meant ¡°safety house¡±. At each safe house, they were hidden and given food. With the quilt¡¯s help, they knew the way to get to the next safe house until they got to the free states in the north.(¸Ä±àÓÚ¡¶ÐÂÀíÄîÓ¢Óï¡·)
