In a small village,a little boy lived with his father and mother. The boy used to get angry very soon. His bad temper made him fall for angry words.

One day,his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became angry. The little boy agreed to do what his father said.

The first day the boy hammered 38 nails into the fence. Then it began to become less. He found it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered!Yet,the boy did not lose his temper.

The father suggested that the boy should now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence.

The father asked him, pointing to the hole, “What do you see there?”

The boy replied, “The holes in the fence!”

Finally, the father told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered on people. You can remove the nails but still see the holes in the fence. Again, you cannot pull out a few nails. The fence never looks the same!It has scars all over!Give up your anger, use words for good and develop kindness! ”

由下文的“He found it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

由第五段第一句“…pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

第三段最后一句提到了“He found it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

temper n.

reduce v.

Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered

was reduced和 was hammered是被动语态。

One day a teacher stood before his class and picked up a large empty glass bottle and filled it with rocks. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. He then added a box of pebbles to the jar, shaking it lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. “Is the jar filled now?” The students said yes.

But then he poured a bag of sand into the bottle. The sand filled in everything else. Once more he asked if it was full and after some thinking they said that it was.

Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I had to stop to wait a while behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road, and I became impatient.

At one point along an open road,I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now,but as I drove near the light,it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.

Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract we all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it is an agreement we have, and we trust each other to follow it: we don't go through red lights.

The whole construction of our society depends on mutual (相互的) trust. We do what we say we’ll do; we show up when we say we’ll show up; and we pay when we say we’ll pay. We trust each other in these matters.

I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night. And as no one would ever have known what a good person I was on the road from Harrisburg to Lewisburg.

2. What did the author do when the traffic light turned red?

   A. Stopping still.

   B. Driving through it.

   C. Looking around for other cars.
