12．Old Mrs Song lived in the ground floor flat．Every evening when Jian Qiang came home from school he found her sitting by her open window．She just （11）A and looked out at the other people of the flats as they came home from work or from school．She never （12）B．She never gave a greeting．Before going up to his flat on the third floor，Jian Qiang sometimes tried to say something （13）D to her：
"Good evening，Mrs Song．"
"What's so good about it？"
He tried to make small talk about the （14）D："It's such a lovely day today．"
But she only answered in the same unhappy way．"What's so lovely about it？"
She was always （15）C a bad feeling．She was unhappy with life and refused to look on the bright side of things．If Jian Qiang passed by her window without saying （16）A to her，she always said something unpleasant to his back．
Sometimes she called after him："Are you looking down your nose at （17）A？"
Another time she said："Too （18）B to say hello to a poor old lady？"
Most of the other neighbors just paid no attention to Mrs Song （19）C Jian Qiang felt sorry for her．He wanted to get to know her but the （20）A step was the hardest．
He decided to face the old lady．
The next time he passed by her（21）D，he said："Hello，Mrs Song，"and then，（22）C she had a chance to answer，he said："Can I step inside and have a chat？"
Mrs Song（23）B him for a moment．Then，to his surprise，she said："All right"，and went to open the front door．
When Jian Qiang was inside，she closed the front door again and shuffled back to her seat by the window．
"My poor old （24）B，"she said，"I don't get enough exercise．"
"Why don't you come for a walk with me in the park？"
"I haven't got a stick．I might fall down．"
"You can lean on my shoulder．If we walk （25）D，you'll be OK．"
"All right then，"she said．"Let's give it a try．"
And for the first time Jian Qiang saw the old lady smile．
