In some parts of China, school children have to cook for themselves. But now, with the help of donations, this becomes a history forever.
At the donation ceremony in southwest China's Lishan Primary School in Yunnan province, kids gathered at playground to receive something new to them -- a kitchen system. Gu Dongjun was the donor of the new system. She wanted the children to grow up healthily.” I hope the kids can eat clean and hot food,” she said.
Lishan Primary School has more than 500students. Half of them live at school, and have to cook for themselves in the open air. They have been picturing their dream kitchen since they knew they would no longer have to cook outside.
It was not just Lishan Primary School getting a new kitchen. Another 12 schools in Yunan Province also got new kitchens. Zhou Faming is the headmaster of Panlong Primary School. He said the new system really helped improve the quality of food. China Youth Development Foundation(中国青少年发展基金会)started an activity recently to support 100 schools every year in poor places. E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.
We live in a society that is producing and using electronics(电子产品) all the time. It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away old ones. In the EU alone, about 8,700,000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over 1,000,000 tons is recycled.
Burying(填埋) e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment. Electronics have dangerous things in them. These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.
In recent years, ____. However, their plans are not always managed properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health. Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.
Another way is to make producers responsible(负责任) for their used products. This means that producers must take back old products which are no longer wanted. They should then make sure they are properly recycled or reused.
As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. Change electronics only when we have to. And don’t buy a product just to have the latest model.
E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.

If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to make such a car-plane called “Transition”, to customers(顾客) by the end of 2012. “It’s the next ‘wow’ vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”
The car-plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute-and fold back up for driving. A runway is still needed to take off and land.
The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.
The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as an easier and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you leave it in the car park at home.
The car-plane is designed to fly under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum take-off weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.
The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be something else you need to pay, like a radio, transponder or GPS and so on.
So far, the company has more than 70 orders. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

There is not enough oil in the world now. As time goes by, it becomes less and less, so what are we going to do when it runs out? Perhaps we will go back to use horses, carriages and bicycles.
In the Second World War, some people didn’t use gas(气体) made from petroleum (石油) in their cars. They made gas from wood and plants instead. The car didn’t go fast, but they ran, so this was better than nothing. However, in the future, we can’t cut down all our trees to make gas; we need our trees for other things, too.
Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity to run our cars, but first we must make the electricity! Some countries have coal(煤炭) and they make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either. Other countries have big, strong rivers, and they can use the power of water to turn turbines (涡轮机) and make electricity more easily and cheaply.
We are also able to get power from the ocean tides(潮). We put turbines into the mouth of the river. Then the tide comes in, the water turns the turbines and then it goes out, it turns them again.
Which of these ways will be used to run our cars in the future?
【小题1】When might people have to go back to use horses and carriages?
A.When they are poor. |
B.When they run out of oil. |
C.When they need more exercise. |
D.When there aren’t any big trees in the world. |
A.Water | B.Coal | C.Wood and plants | D.Tides |
A.2 | B.5 | C.4 | D.3 |
A.There is more petroleum than we can use now. |
B.Trees are needed for some other things besides making gas. |
C.We got electricity from ocean tides in the old days. |
D.Gas wasn’t used to run cars in the Second World War. |
A.how to run our cars |
B.what to do when oil runs out |
C.different types of gas |
D.the ways to make electricity |

Astronauts, people who fly into space, need special training. First they go to Houston, Texas. That is the home of the Johnson Space Centre. There they are tested to see how strong and smart they are.
One of the first tests is for the heart. The people walk or run, then the space doctors see how fast their hearts are beating.
Another important test is performed. In this test the person must curl(蜷曲)his body up in a ball. When he is in that position, he is put into a round cloth bag. The doctors give him no idea how long he will have to stay in the bag. If a spaceship broke down in space, the astronauts would get into bags like this. Then they would have to wait and curl up in darkness, until help could arrive. You can see that an astronaut must not be afraid of tight space or darkness.
After the tests, only the best people are chosen to start astronaut training in a training centre. The astronauts in training learn many other things. They learn how to jump out of a moving airplane. They learn to how to blow up a lifeboat and get into it while they are in the ocean. The astronauts also have to learn how to get lifted out of the ocean by helicopter(直升机). That may look fun, but it can be dangerous.
After they finish training, the astronauts continue to work. They stay in good shape by running and doing exercise. They read about their special jobs. In that way they can learn new facts about space travel.
Then the big day comes. The astronaut is told to go to work on a flight into space. The crew members(全体船员)get to know each other first. Then they can learn which job each will do.
【小题1】The astronauts don’t know how long they will stay in the bag in the test because ________________.
A.the doctors need to know how strong they are |
B.the astronauts need to show how smart they are |
C.good astronauts mustn’t be afraid of darkness or tight space |
D.nobody knows when help will come if the spaceship breaks down |
A.walk or run in space | B.jump out of the moving plane |
C.blow up a lifeboat | D.get lifted out of water by helicopter |
A.a, b, c, d, e | B.d, a, e, b, c | C.b, a, d, c, e | D.c, d, e, b, a |
A.After the tests, only the best people are chosen to start astronaut training in a training centre. |
B.The crew members get to know each other after the tests. |
C.One of the first tests is for the heart. |
