I’m lying on my back in my grandfather’s orchard (果园), looking up at the branches above me. It is one of the last days of summer. Already the days are shorter and the nights are cooler. Some kinds of apples are already ripe(成熟的). Others will be ready to pick soon. I think of my grandmother’s apple pie, and how I used to make it with her. She died last year, before the apple harvest, and I have not had her pie since then. I really miss her. I hear bees busily humming about, visiting the late summer flowers. The gentle hum of their wings nearly sends me to sleep.

The sky is as blue as my grandfather’s eyes. Above me, big white clouds ran across the sky like pieces of cotton blowing in the wind. School starts in another week, and time seems to have slowed down.

“Sophie!” calls my grandfather. “Is that you?” I stand up, take his hand, and tell him all about my day as we walk through the orchard. We talk about apples, and bees and Grandma. He tells me that he misses her too.

He puts his rough, brown farmer’s hand around my shoulder and pulls me close. “ You know, Sophie,” he says, “ I spent the morning in the attic (阁楼), and you’ll never guess what I found. It’s the recipe(烹饪法) for Grandma’s apple pie. I used to help her make it sometimes. I can’t do it all alone, but you used to help her too. Maybe between the two of us, we can work it out. Want to try?”

“ But it won’t be the same without Grandma,” I tell him.

“That’s true,” he says, “but nothing is the same without Grandma. Still, I don’t think that she would want us never to have another apple pie. What do you say?” I nod yes, and we walk towards home…toward an afternoon in the farmhouse kitchen, making Grandma’s famous apple pie.

As a girl, I've spent a great deal of my time on earth concerned about my weight. So I do know something about exercise. Let me tell you about the calorie-burning activities I've tried or will try.

Salsa (萨尔萨舞)

I try to maintain my weight through dancing. Dancing improves my coordination and sense of rhythm in addition to burning calories. I'm personally interested in salsa, which I find sexy and expressive(有表现力的). But I have not yet to start classes, because classes are very expensive, and I cannot find a dance partner.

Ping-Pong

Ping-pong is the national sport of China, so how could I know nothing about it?

My father is a ping-pong fan, and a really good player. He's won several informal (非正式的) matches. My relationship with ping-pong has always been on-and-off. I'll get into it for a while, and then lose interest. The reason is because I can’t find a good partner. Some stronger can depress you, while someone weaker (or just as weak) can make the game boring.

Tae Kwon Do (跆拳道)

I've recently decided to try tae kwon do as my regular exercise activity. There’s a story behind this choice: A few weeks ago, I was sitting on a bus, concentrating on a book. Suddenly, the bus became very quiet except for the sound of a woman’s crying. I looked up to see what had happened and overheard whispers that she had just quarreled with a man, and the man slapped(拍打) her face. No one on the bus dared say anything because the man looked really strong. Even now I feel ashamed I was among the silent.

That’s why I've made up my mind to learn something that will help me protect others and myself.

1.We can guess that the girl is _____ according to the passage.

A.too thin

B.a little fat

C.careful

D.brave

2.Why doesn’t the girl want to go to learn salsa?

A.The dance is too difficult to learn.

B.Nobody wants to dance with her.

C.She has no time to join the classes.

D.She finds it sexy and expressive.

3.She is interested in ping-pong because ________.

A.she can play it well

B.it is the national sport

C.her father plays it well

4.She has made up her mind to learn Tae Kwon Do mainly because______.

A.she wants to lose weight

B.she wants to protect others and herself

C.she wants to win some matches

A.the girl has learnt salsa for a long time

B.the girl has played ping-pong many times

A. they think they should have done                B. you have done nothing

C. people try and tell you they are not so bad         D. someone just said to me

E. it’s a time to remember the things

Birthdays are strange things. The more you have, the more you try and pretend they don’t matter, and the more     1.  . I’m not really sure why they think so. It’s true that you are getting older, but as     2.  , “Who isn’t getting older every day?” The problem may be that a birthday reminds people of all the things

3.  , but have not. I certainly understand that feeling, though I think    4.    that I most want to do — a kind of personal re-ordering (重新排序) of the to-do list. What makes you depressed(郁闷) on your birthday is that you realize your re-ordered to-do list is exactly the same as it was last year. That makes you feel     5.  , and not been anywhere. I have not had that experience this year. I look back at where I was last year and find things have changed since then.
