Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
Newcastle is beginning to draw tourists from all corners of Europe. It’s one of the fastest developing cities in the United Kingdom. It is said most visitors come here to see the famous soccer team play. The mood of the locals is often changed by the success or failures of the local team.
Newcastle’s most popular place is the Gate. It’s in the center of the city and has many attractions including bars, restaurants, sports bars, pubs and so on. During a home game it becomes a real home to happiness.
Culture and local history lovers can make their dreams come true by taking one of the local city tour buses. They come and leave every few minutes and stop at all the important historical sites in the city. Also the seats and the environment on the buses are comfortable. It’s the best way to see the city without tiring yourself out or getting cold. Places such as the Hancock Museum and Millennium Bridge are must-see attractions. But be careful if you’re short of time, Newcastle is a big place. So you should be prepared to kill a few hours on one of these buses.
If you want to watch the local team play soccer in the St. James Park, remember to book a ticket as early as possible. The locals are crazy soccer fans, and you’ll find it hard to get a ticket if you don’t wait in the queue early.

Venice, a city in the northeast of Italy, is famous throughout the world for its buildings and romantic canals (运河). But in February every year, people come to Venice for another reason. The city carnival fills the place with excitement and fun. This year, the celebration runs from February 4 to 21.
Colorful costumes have always played a very important role in the Venetian carnival. The carnival happens at the start of the Christian fasting (斋戒) period of Lent. It was traditionally a time to go a bit crazy with eating, drinking, dancing and dressing up before the fast began. People used masks to hide their social identity so that the nobility(贵族) would look no different from the commoners.
Today the carnival is largely for the tourists. “Venetians don’t dress up for Carnival after the age of 10.” Giuseppina Giudice, who has lived in the city all her life, told the Guardian. “All we see of Carnival is a river of strangers who flow into town to feel ‘Venetian’. They fill it, buy a cheap mask and leave with nothing but photographs of St Mark’s Square.”
Some locals want to bring back the original (最初的) feel of Carnival. In 2009, two social networking groups started organizing their own carnival. Visitors were invited. But there were no expensive tickets or fancy ball dresses---- just an old-fashioned Italian street party. “Tourists are welcome to our party ---- the more we can show them about the real Venice rather than the postcard Venice, the better,” Matteo Secchi, one of the organizers, told the Guardian.

A week ago, Columbus Middle School asked the parents of their school to choose a sport for their child to play. Here’s some information about the sports.

Sports 1: Basketball

We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. So students should sign up (报名) as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. Each student will have to pay $ 10 each time for the cost of the bus. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sports 2: Gym

We will use St. Peter’s Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 p.m. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent from being thirsty. All the activities here are free. And there will be a teacher on duty for each activity.

Sports 3: Hiking

Hiking (远足)will be at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 p.m. and finish 90 minutes later. There will be 15 students in each group. And three teachers will be with the students. This sport will cost $ 75 per hour. Students should take plenty of water and sunglasses.

Sports 4: Swimming

The Kowloon City Swimming Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and watch the students from the poolside. We will only be able to use the pool for one hour (2: 45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards on watch. When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.

Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’ d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.

Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.

Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.

What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.

For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.

Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______.

  A. relaxed            B. worried          C. hungry           D. proud

2.How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon?

  A. They ate it in a polite way.               B. They only ate its best part.

  C. They ate every part of it.             D. They shared only one piece.

3. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ______.

  A. was just a rich businessman                B. worked hard all the time

  C. lived a rich but healthy life              D. knew how to make money

4.The underlined part “the heart of the watermelon” in the last paragraph refers to ______.

  A. the best part of the watermelon            B. the writer’s busy life

  C. the writer’s decision of making money      D. the writer’s hope of enjoying life

5.It can be learned from the passage that ______.

  A. one has to work hard to reach his goal     B. a friend in need is a friend in deed

  C. watermelon is the healthiest fruit         D. one should keep work-life balance
