    2．Mark Twain was born in Florida，Missouri in 1835．His real name is Samuel Clemens．He is considered as one of the greatest American writers in 19th century．His novels and stories about the Mississippi River，such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer （1876）and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn （1885），are still popular with modern readers．
    In 1839the Clemens moved to Hannibal，Missouri，on the Mississippi River where young Samuel experienced the exciting and colourful life．Like many writers of his day he had little formal （正式的） education．His education came from the print shops and newspaper offices．In 1853Samuel left Hannibal with a wish to travel．On a trip to New Orleans he asked a riverboat pilot to teach him his skill．By the spring of 1859Samuel was a licensed riverboat pilot．
    At the beginning of the American Civil War Samuel chose not to get involved and moved to Carson City，Nevada．After an unsuccessful try at gold mining（采矿业），he began to work for a newspaper in Virginia City，Nevada．He first wrote under the pen name"Mark Twain"in 1863．Twain wrote his first popular story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in 1865．
