Nat lived in a small town in England. He always stayed in England for his holidays, but then last year he thought, “I've never been to other countries. All my friends go to Spain, and they like it very much. So this year I'm going there, too.” First he went to the capital, Madrid, and stayed in a hotel for a few days. On the first morning he went nut for a walk.

In England people drive on the left, but in Spain they drive on the right. Nat forgot about this, and while he was walking on a busy street, a bicycle knocked him down.

Scientists think that a game like bowing was played in Egypt thousands of years ago.

Toys that look like a ball and bowling pins were found buried with a child who died around 5200 B. C.

People who study history know that the game was popular in Germany around 200~300 A. D. It was played by people in some churches in order to show that they were good Christians. When people bowled poorly, they had to go to church more often.

The first bowling place built inside a building opened in England in 1455. Then the game was taken to the United States where most people played it outside.

During the 1800s, many people in the United States began to bowl for money, so several cities made the game illegal. Many people kept on bowling illegally. A group named the American Bowling Congress (ABC) began around 1900. The job of this group was to clean up bowling and make it a gentlemen's game again.

At this time, the game was mostly played by men. If women played, they hung a curtain up so that the men were not able to see them.

Then, in 1916, a woman's group named the Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) made a point of showing that the game was fine for both men and women.

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble-and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP(超感官知能).

ESP stands for Extra Sensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Here is an example:A woman was doing washing. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a telegram came. The woman' s father had died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what is behind these strange mental messages. Here's another example-one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There's room for one more.” The man felt the driver was Deather, so he ran away. The next day the man was getting on a crowded bus. This driver said, “There's room for one more.” Then the man saw the driver's face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn't get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!

Some people say stories like these are lies or coincidences. Others, including some scientists say that ESP is true. Form studies of ESP, we may some day learn more about the human mind.

2.According to the passage, the woman ________.

B.died of heart attack while sitting in a chair

C.felt her father died while she was washing

D.refused to get on the bus

3.The example of the man shows an ability to ________.

[ ]

A.avoid traffic accidents

B.judge the good and evil of a person

C.know about the events that are happening some distance away

D.sense a danger that will actually happen later on

4.The best title for this passage is ________.

[ ]

A.A Sixth Sense
B.The Human Mind

D.A Terrible Dream

In the forest or in the fields you can often see small hills of earth and busy little ants. Ants live in different places. An ant has two strong jaws to dig soil, to cut up food, to carry about the eggs or the young.

The head of an ant is triangular with two large eyes and sometime three more very small eyes. These eyes have many parts, so the ant can see everything that moves around it. Some of these eyes see things near it, while others can see things far off in the distance.

The ant has six legs. Its feelers have twelve joins; with them the ant finds its way in underground home. Some ants do not build nests, but make use of hollows under stones or logs. Others build their little hill with leaves, bits of wood, sand and earth.
