This winter, a 23-year-old college student’s story moved millions of Chinese people.
Hong Zhanhui has raised an abandoned(被遗弃的) child for 11 years.
Hong was born in a small village in Henan Province. When he was 12, his father suddenly went crazy and killed his one-year-old sister. The family then adopted a baby girl called Chenchen.
Later, Hong’s mother ran away from home. She couldn’t stand Hong’s mad father’s beating(殴打). Hong had to support the family and bring up Chenchen by himself.
In 1998, Hong entered Xihua No. 1 Senior High School, about 20 kilometers from his home.
Hong took Chenchen along with him. He never talked to others about his hard life. He put his time and energy into many things: working to get money, looking after his adopted sister, and sending medicine home for his father.
Hong sold pens, books and tapes to make money. “Many people looked down on me for that,” Hong recalled. “But I didn’t care.”
After he entered Hunan Huaihua College in 2003, Hong took on more part-time jobs, such as selling instant noodles and phone cards. Earlier this year, Hong sent Chenchen, now 12, to a primary school in Hunan with the money he got.
When Hong’s story became public, many people wanted to give him money. But Hong refused(拒绝).
“Poverty and suffering should not be an excuse for begging sympathy and help from society,” said Hong. “I think it is most important for a man to support himself and be strong.”
Recently, Hong’s school started a fund(基金) named after him. The fund is to give money to help poor college students. About 100000 has been put into the fund.

Cooking shows on TV are usually all about exotic（外来的）foods. Thanks to globalization, people everywhere are introducing their taste foods to dishes from every corner of the world. Today's laws on foods are different from country to country. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to check if any harmful pesticides（农药）were used. When you know the local farmer who grows your food and the fields that are used to produce it, the chances of being polluted are greatly reduced.
Buying local foods can also have a beneficial influence on the environment. By supporting local growers , consumers（消费者）can keep green space and farmland in their communities in good condition. Buying local also helps to build the local community. If farmers can sell directly to consumers instead of middlemen, they will earn more money for their families. Additional profits（利润）also make farmers care for their soil and keep quality standards high. In the end, it's a win-win situation for both parties.

This is an open market where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, and meat directly to the public.
