Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Richmond Film Society. Tonight, we begin a season of Marilyn Monroe films. Before we star the film I’d like to say just a few words about Marilyn Monroe’s life.

Marilyn was born in Los Angeles in 1926, but had quite a sad life as a child. Her father didn’t want to see her from the time she was born and her mother became ill when she was very young and stayed in hospital for a long period of time. Between 1926 and 1935, Marilyn lived with lots of different families.

In 1935, she went to a school for girls with no parents, but didn’t like it and left in 1942 when she married Jim Dougherty. In 1949 she met the famous film director Johnny Hyde, and in 1950 she made her first film, The Asphalt Jungle.

Between 1950 and 1961 she made thirty-one films. She was, however, never very happy. She died in Hollywood in 1962.

On Sunday morning, a strong earthquake hit Indonesia and then big tsunamis(海啸) followed. They soon went on to other countries in the south and southeast Asia as well as East Africa.
Tsunamis are especially dangerous for children. By Wednesday,  nearly 60 000 people died because of the tsunamis. 30% of them were children,  and most of them were 5 to 12 years old.
In open seas tsunamis are only one or two metres high. When they are near land, they are as high as 10 metres,  Houses and cars near the sea can be taken away by these big waves. Because tsunamis move fast and can travel to another side of the sea within one day, they may affect(影响)a lot of places.
The Pacific Ocean(太平洋)has a lot of strong tsunamis because of the size of the ocean and large earthquakes there. China doesn\'t see tsunamis often because its sea floor is quite flat(平的). Islands around China also help the country avoid from them.
What should you do when there\'s a tsunamis? Move to a safe place. If you are near the sea and you feel the earth shake, move to higher ground. Stay away from rivers and streams(溪流).
Reported by "China Daily" on Friday, December 31st, 2004.

1. The big Asian tsunamis first happened________.

A. on Friday morning               B. on the morning of December 26th
C. on December 31st, 2004          D. three days ago

2. Which places did the big tsunamis hit?
A. All the coastal(海岸的) countries.
B. Only in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
C. South and southeast Asia as well as East Africa.
D. Vietnam(越南)and India.

3. Why does the Pacific Ocean have a lot of strong tsunamis?
A,  Because there are few islands in the ocean.
B,  Because of the strong wind on the sea.
C,  Because there are many Asian countries around the Pacific Ocean.
D. Because of the large earthquakes and the size of ocean.

4. Which of the following is wrong?
A. In open seas tsunamis are one or two metres high.
B. Tsunamis can\'t travel to another side of the sea within 24 hours.
C. Most of the children who died in tsunamis were under 5-12 years old.
D. China\'s sea floor is quite flat and tsunamis seldom happen.

5. You should________ when there\'s a tsunamis according to the passage.
A. listen to a weather report
B. try to find out what will happen
C. run to the policeman for help
D. get to a higher and safer place as soon as possible

A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street boy was walking around the shining car. "Is this your car, Paul?" he asked. Paul answered, "Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was very surprised. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you nothing? Sir, I wish..." He stopped.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.

"I wish," the boy went on," that I could be a brother like that." Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"

"Oh yes, I'd love that. "

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, "Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?"

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked.

He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(跛足的) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.

"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just like it... then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about."
