I work as a postal letter carrier in Charlotte. One day several years ago,I drove up to a mailbox. Christy, the young divorcee (离婚的人) who lived there, was waiting by the roadside. She said that she had a story to tell me.

About six months earlier it seemed that I had delivered a letter to her, which had her street number on it but was addressed to another house with the same number on a different street in the neighborhood. She decided to drop off the letter at the correct house. It turned out that the letter had been intended for Johnson, who happened to be single. They talked for a little while, and later on he called. Then they started dating and had been going out together ever since.

I felt sorry for delivering the letter wrong, but I was pleased that I had brought these nice people together.

A few months later a For Sale sign went up in Christy's yard, and then the wedding invitations were sent out. Soon the house was sold. The wedding happened. And Christy, with her kids, moved into Johnson's house. A few months later,I saw a For Sale sign in their yard. I feared the marriage might be in trouble,so I made up an excuse to go to their door and check on them. Christy opened the door, smiled broadly, and pointed to her huge stomach. "We're having twins!" she said. "This house won't be big enough,so we have to move."I suddenly realized that my one misdelivered letter was now giving two little yet-to- beborn people a shot at life. "Wash every day and you'll die young,my son!”People often said those words, long ago of course. Napoleon's wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath. " lt,s quicker," she always said. Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor, 4t Soap and water have never touched my body.”And the doctor answered, uThat's true. I know..."

Why didn't people wash in those days long ago?

Well, they did not have water in their house. They carried water from rivers or from holes in the ground. Town people bought it from a watercarrier. Sometimes it was expensive, and soap was always expensive, too. They drank water of course, and so they were clean inside. They did not think about the outside! And this is true, they just did not like a bath.

Modern life is different. We use a lot of soap and water. And we are all quite clean. However,a few people use too much soap, and they often get ill. Who are these people?

Many young women work as hairdressers. They wash and then "dress" other women's hair. That is their job,and they like it. Young hairdressers wash dirty heads on a busy day. Their hands are soapy for seven or eight hours, and that is not a good thing.  A young hairdresser's hands are often red and ugly, and she must then go to a doctor.

We always celebrated Dad's birthday on Thanksgiving Day,even after he entered a nursing home. As years went on,these celebrations had double meanings to us―a traditional birthday party for Dad,thanking him for all that he had done for us in our lives. When we knew it might be his last birthday, the whole family decided to get together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home.

Dad was a good storyteller and we were always his listeners. But at this special moment,I announced it was now Dad's turn to listen to stories for a change. I asked everyone to tell Dad why he loved him. The room became still. Then one after another, people told stories from their hearts, while Dad listened with tears in eyes. People brought kinds of stories back to our minds―stories about when they were little, stories about when Dad was young, and stories that shared family happiness.

The stories went on one after another. Everyone seemed to have more than one story. Even the little grandchildren couldn't wait to tell Dad why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life, here was our chance to celebrate him. A few months later,at Dad's memorial service,we more fully realized what we had given Dad that night. Those are the stories people usually tell at a funeral (葬礼) after a loved one is no longer alive to hear the words. They tell stories, full of tears. But we had given those memories to Dad in his life, and we had told them through laughter, accompanied (伴随) by hugs and joys. He had them in his mind during his last days and months.

Words do matter, and they are enough. We just need to say them or to speak them publicly to the ones we love. That's the way to give back love and our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life.

Beauty meant something special to me for a time. I guess that was before I was six or seven years old. Later I was sent to an orphanage (孤儿院) and the life there turned me into an old man.

I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like a little soldier and then I would get into one of the two straight lines for breakfast with other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.

One Saturday morning after breakfast,I saw the houseparent (宿舍管理员) chasing the beautiful butterflies that lived in the bushes around the orphanage.

I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful living things, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins (大头4十) through their head and wings, and put them on a board.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times into the bushes, all by myself;the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands...

When the telephone rang, the houseparent put the large board down on the ground and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the board and looked at the butterflies he caught just now. One of them was still moving about so I touched it carefully making one of the pins fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away.

Soon the houseparent came back and started shouting at me. He picked up the board and started beating me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. I sat there by that big old tree for a long time. And I tried to get all the butterfly pieces back together, but it was too hard to do so.
