On the first evening, the three of us were tired after walking for about eight hours. We soon fell asleep. In the morning, I was surprised to find the bag of food had been open.
“Bears,” said Joe, “we should hang the food in a tree tonight.”
Later that day we stopped in a beautiful field by a river. We put up the tent and fell asleep. During the night the bears came again. This time they took the food from the tree.
“Bears can climb trees. They can smell food from a long way away,” said Ben.
“We must keep the camp clean. Bears must think our rubbish is food,” I said. “And we should make lots of noise, too. If they know where we are, they may not come any closer,” said Joe.
“But if you see a bear,” said Ben, “you mustn't make any sudden moves or make a sound, and you mustn’t run either. No one can run faster in the forest than a bear. And remember we don’t have a gun to keep us safe.” That night, we went to sleep ... or we tried to.
The next day, while the others were resting, I went for a walk in the forest. Suddenly, I saw a baby bear playing with some sticks and stones. He looked so soft and friendly, and I thought, “If I reach out, I can just touch him.”
There was a loud noise behind me.
I didn’t dare to move, not even turn my head. There was another loud noise. The baby bear looked up, and ran towards me. I turned pale and he ran past me into the woods.
I couldn’t turn round until a few minutes later. Then I saw the baby bear and his huge mother walking away.
I ran back to my friends. I have never run so fast.
For the next 10 days, every time there was sudden noise, my blood went cold.

3.What was the loud noise behind the writer?

C. It was the baby bear’s mother. She was coming to find her baby.

In northern China during spring, big sandstorms often make trouble for students and everyone else. When the sky is dark with sand, buses and cars all move much more slowly. Sometimes, people can’t even see for twenty meters.
Sandstorms usually happen in spring. This year, sandstorms started in late March. They have happened in more than ten provinces (省) in northern China this year. More than seventy million people have had problems in those places because of the sandstorms.
People in southern China don’t have to worry about this kind of bad weather. Most of the sand comes from Gansu and Inner Mongolia (内蒙古). In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don’t get much rain. People there have been cutting down too many trees. When there are not many trees, the ground can’t keep enough water. Over the years, the ground dries up and turns to sand. When spring comes, the ground becomes looser (更松散的). Strong winds take the loose sand into the sky.
Sandstorms are bad for people’s health. If people breathe (呼吸) in too much sand, they could cough or have asthma (哮喘).
Sandstorms also give farmers a lot of problems. Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms and never get back home. The winds also tear down farmer’s houses.
What can you do to stop sandstorms? Here is an idea: Ask your parents to help you plant some trees this spring.
If you see people cutting down too many trees, tell them about the dangers of sandstorms, and ask your government to stop them from cutting.
1.In Which season do sandstorms usually happen?
A. In spring. B. In summer.
C. In autumn. D. In winter.
2.Which of the following provinces in China is often hit by sandstorms?
A. Fujian Province. B. Yunnan Province.
C. Jiangsu Province. D. Hebei Province.
3.The underlined phrases “tear down” in the sentence means “______” in Chinese.
A. 使……哭泣 B. 弄倒 C. 摧残 D. 加固
4.According to the passage, what CANNOT be caused by sandstorms?
A. Health problems.
B. Traffic problems.
C. The loss of farm animals.
D. Noise pollution.
5.Which is NOT stated in the passage?
A. Trees can help keep enough rain water.
B. More trees need to be planted.
C. Some people are doing harm to the environment.
D. Sandstorms are the main cause of asthma.
