    　　Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family．When she was young, she took lessons in music and drawing, and read great books．She also traveled a great deal(大量地)with her parents．

    　　As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure．She enjoyed helping them．

    　　At last her mind was made up,“I'm going to be a nurse．”She decided．

    　　“Nursing isn't the right work for a lady,”her father told her．

    　　“Then I will make it so．”She smiled．And then she went to learn nursing in Germany and France．

    　　During the Crimean War in 1854, she and a team of thirty-eight nurses went to the front(前线)hospitals．What they saw there was terrible．Many soldiers died because the hospitals were dirty．But the brave nurses went to work hard to make the hospital clean and stop soldiers dying．Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men．Her only pay was smiles from the dying soldiers．But they were more than enough for this kind woman．

    　　After the war she returned to England in 1856, and was honored for her services by Queen Victoria．But Florence said that her work had just begun．She raised money to build the Nightingale Home(疗养院)for Nurses in London．She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries．

    　　She died at the age of ninety, still trying to serve others through her work as a nurse．In fact, it is because of her that we honor nurses today．

    Homework is a big part of going to school. If it’s a heavy homework day and it seems like you got a task in every subject but gym and lunch, you’ll need to spend more time on homework. It’s a good idea to come up with some kind of homework timetable, especially if you enjoy sports or activities or have an after-school job.

    Jane Goodall is one of the most well-known scientists in the world. Much of the information we have today about chimpanzees comes from the research of Jane Goodall.

    Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934. She became interested in animals and animal stories when she was a very young child. She always dreamed of working with wild animals. When she was eleven years old, she decided that she wanted to go to Africa to live with and write about animals. But this was not the kind of thing young women usually did in the 1940s. The opportunity came at last. A school friend invited her to Africa. Jane worked as a waitress until she had got enough money to travel there.

    In 1957, Jane Goodall traveled to Africa. She soon met the well-known scientist Louis Leakey and began working for him as an assistant. He later asked her to study a group of chimpanzees living by a lake in Tanzania. Very little was known about wild chimpanzees at that time.

    Jane spent many years studying chimpanzees in this area of Africa. It was not easy work. They were very shy and would run away whenever she came near. She learned to watch them from far away using binoculars. Over time, she slowly gained their trust(信任). She gave the chimpanzees human names such as David Graybeard, Flo and Fifi. Watching the chimpanzees, she made many discoveries. They ate vegetables and fruits. But she found that they also eat meat. A few weeks later, she made an even more surprising discovery. She saw chimpanzees making and using tools(工具) to help them catch insects.

    Jane Goodall has written many books for adults and children about wild chimpanzees. Her most recent book is called Hope for Animals and Their World. It tells about saving several kinds of endangered animals.
