    Olympic medals are gold, silver and bronze. But the 2020 Tokyo Games want their medals to be “green”, according to CNN. Japan is going to make the Olympic 2020 medals by reused materials.

    Japan has one of the highest recycling rates in Asia, according to OECD data. However, this is mainly used for plastic, paper and glass. The Tokyo Games will collect unwanted mobiles and other electronic devices (电子产品) from the Japanese public. They will recycle metal from those devices to help make 5，000 medals. Organizers hope to get eight tons of metal.

    The public also gets a chance to be part of the Olympic journey, said the organizers. Recycled, or “green”, materials have been used to make Olympic medals in the past. Last year's Rio Games made 30 percent of their silver and bronze medals from recycled materials.

    How does e-waste recycling work? Recycling or processing companies either collect or buy tons of this e-waste and used industrial products. They then use chemical processes to separate the different metals. Much of this work takes place in developing countries such as China, India and Indonesia.

    Rachel Carson(1907-1964) was a pioneer of the world’s environmental movement through her writing about the protection of the natural world. Her 1962 book Silent Spring made her well known by many people. It describes the harmful changes in the environment of using toxic(有害的) chemicals on farmland.

    Carson’s career started as a biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries. In 1951 she published her first book, The Sea Around Us, which became a bestseller. Norway awards the Rachel Carson Prize to women who have made great contributions to the field of environmental protection. In 1980, 16 years after her death, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in America.

For example, many early connected-home devices(装置) don't have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击). In addition, it could be difficult to get these devices to work together because they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.
