根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案
A four-year-old girl is lying in the arms of a doctor. She has just become motherless. A bomb destroyed her home and killed her mother.
Every day we see pictures like this on TV or in newspapers. We see young Iraqi children begging for food and water from American and British soldiers. They move through towns and cities towards the capital, Baghdad. We see these children following grown-ups, carrying bags of things almost the same size as their small bodies as they run away from their homes.
“Dad, why are the Americans attacking us? Are we going to be killed?” asks the son of Abu Sinar, an Iraqi engineer. Abu finds it hard to explain this war to his eight-year-old son.
He tries to comfort him by saying, “The bombs are far away from us. The Americans are fighting the soldiers. We are going to be all right.” Abu knows this isn’t always the truth, but what else can he do? In Baghdad, parents give their children sleeping pills to make them sleep so that they won’t hear the sound of bombing. And all the schools are closed.
“All we can do is to listen to and hear the war,” said Abu. “People in Baghdad, men and women, young and old, have to live in fear. We don’t know where the next bombs are going. We can do nothing but wait to be killed.”

词汇综合运用:阅读短文,用括号内所给词的适当形式填空,必要时可加助动词。
It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see. I went to her room in a hurry and stood at the door. She was an old woman, 1 (sit) by the bed, trying to put socks on her 2 (foot).
She asked if I 3 (can)help put on her socks. Instead, I said something like this, “How are you ____4_____(feel)? Your blood pressure was high, but it’s ___5_____(good) today…”
She _____6____(stop)me, “Sit down, Doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was 7 (surprise) and then I sat down. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she 8 (not see) him for five years. She believed that this was the main reason for her health problems. After 9 (hear) her story, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She said no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to 10 (listen).
Each story is different. Some are true, others not. Yet that does not 11 (real) matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard. From the old lady I learned that listening to 12 (someone) story does not cost a lot of money, but it is much better than expensive medicine.
