WHAT would you do if you were invisible(隐形的)?To many people, this is a fun question.

Do you think this can be true? With recent talks of making invisibility a reality, this fun question could actually become a real problem for people and their governments to consider.

It has recently been reported that researchers in the United States and England are confident that they understand, in theory(理论), how to create an invisibility cloak(斗篷), similar to the one that Harry Potter received from his father. They have already begun to work on it, and are asking for help in developing the material that would be used to create this invisibility cloak.

“Is it science fiction? Well, it’s a theory and that already is not science fiction,” said Professor Sir John Pendry. “It’s possible in theory to do all these Harry Potter things, but we should face the challenge, that is our engineering ability.

“Now, no invisibility cloak has been made yet, but the first testing of invisibility technology could be soon,” said Pendry. “We will have a cloak after not too long.”

Though the idea sounds great, it could be a bad thing if it is used in wars.

A. Engineering ability. B. Money.

C. Material. D. Water.

2.Which of the following words shares the closest meaning with “fiction” in the 4th paragraph?

3.What is the author’s attitude toward invisibility’s becoming a reality?

A. Agree. B. Disagree.

C. A little worried. D. We don’t know.

4.How is the passage organized?

A. Topic---Supporting examples

B. Opinion---Discussion---Description

C. Main idea--- Comparison (比较)

On March 3, 1887, the lives of two amazing women were changed forever when Anne Sullivan, a poor university graduate, arrived at the home of the wealthy Keller family to teach their six-year-old daughter Helen. It was a difficult job as Helen was unable to see, hear or speak because of illness.

Anne had been suggested to the Kellers by her university professor, a close friend of Mr. Keller. Before she arrived, Anne expected her new pupil to be a quiet, weak child. But Helen was nothing like that. When Anne first walked through the Kellers’ door, the energetic Helen nearly knocked her over in her hurry to feel Anne’s face, clothing and bag.

Helen was used to visitors bringing her sweets, and angrily tried to force open Anne’s case to take her candy. But Anne calmed her down by allowing Helen to play with her watch. So began one of the most successful student-teacher relationships in history.

Anne Sullivan was only twenty years old when she began teaching Helen. She had to not only teach the child all the usual school subjects, but also control Helen’s sometimes wild behaviour. Her well-meaning parents allowed Helen to do as she liked at home. Realizing that such an environment was unsuitable for learning, Anne requested that she and Helen live in a small house nearby.

As soon as Helen began learning, it became clear that she was especially intelligent. She quickly learned to read and write, and by the age of ten she could also speak.

In 1900, Helen started studying at Radcliffe University, and graduated first in her class in 1904. She was the very first blind and deaf person to get a university degree. How did she do it? Anne Sullivan read all of Helen’s books and then signed the information into her hand. Anne remained at Helen’s side until her death in 1936. Helen became a world-famous writer, and fought for disabled people’s rights until her death on Jun 1, 1968.

1.How did Anne come to work at the Kellers’ home?

A. She replied to a job advertisement.

B. She was introduced by her family friend.

C. she was recommended by her university professor.

D. She met Mr. Keller while studying at university.

2.What surprised Anne most about Helen when they first met?

A. How intelligent Helen was.

B. Helen gave Anne a gift.

C. The way Helen’s parents treated her.

D. How forceful Helen was.

3.According to the passage, Helen’s parents______.

A. allowed her to do as she wished

B. gave her too many gifts and sweets.

C. did not spend much time with her

D. cared little about her education.

4.Which of the following is NOT true about Helen’s university studies?

A. She was greatly helped by Anne.

B. She was the best student in her class.

C. She was able to graduate in three years.

D. She was the first deaf and blind university graduate.

5.According to the passage, both Anne and Helen_____.

A. died in their 60s B. were well educated

C. came from rich families D. fought for human rights

Actually, long-distance bicycle camping is one of the happiest activities I have ever experienced. I generally sleep poorly at night, but in the woods on a tour, I sleep like a baby with the music of insects. In the morning, birds wake me up. I eat a snack before getting up, and then I quickly pack my sleeping bag, tent, and other things and get on the road. Usually I have less speed. Traveling by bike allows me to stop anywhere, such as lakes(especially places to swim), woods, and scenic spots(景点).

Somewhere near lunch, I find a small drugstore and buy some bread, sandwich materials, and fruit. In the afternoon, my speeds are higher, and I spend less time at stops. In the late afternoon, I start thinking about stopping. I finally find a place in the early evening, cook a simple meal, and rest and cool off. As it starts to get dark, I put up my tent, and fall asleep.

There are exciting times and difficult times as well. Visiting strange or famous places are always exciting to me. I meet and talk with interesting people along the way. Enjoying beautiful scenes, meeting wild animals(usually at my camping site), and traveling up and down hills also make me cheerful. On the other hand, I may run into rainy or hot days, have to repair my bike, or just find myself in a bad state. The problems are easily dealt with. The pleasures remain in my mind for years.

1. Where does the writer usually have a good sleep?

A. In a hotel. B. At home.

C. In the woods. D. In a drugstore.

2.From the passage, we know the writer has the following abilities EXCEPT ___.

A. Cooking outside B. Talking with animals

C. Putting up tents D. Fixing up bikes

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer has to sleep late during the tour.

B. The writer doesn’t want to get up early.

C. The writer always has fruit for breakfast.

D. The writer rides faster in the afternoon.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer _______.

A. enjoys a free and pleasant bike ride

B. rides a bike to work every day

C. is afraid to meet animals on the road

D. is unhappy to ride a bike alone
