    4．The animal kingdom，in all its beauty and diversity （多样性），is like an old tree．Each branch is a family of species （物种），and each leaf is one kind of species．Thanks to British scientist Charles Darwin，we are able to see this beautiful tree of evolution （进化）．
    Born in 1809，young Darwin was heading for a medical career．Later he found his love for the natural sciences．Then in 1831he took the ship HMS Beagle and set sail on a five-year scientific trip around the world．
    During the trip，Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands，about 800kilometers west of Ecuador （厄瓜多尔），South America．The islands were home to many kinds of plants and animals．He noticed each island had a particular kind of bird，but they all looked a little different．It later helped his studies on evolution．
    On his return to England in 1836，he sat down to solve the puzzles he collected on the trip．He later came up with a theory （理论） of evolution．And after 20years of hard work，in 1859，Darwin released the life-changing book，On the Origin of Species （《物种起源》），a very important theory in evolution and natural selection （选择）．
    Few have changed the way we look at the world like Darwin，who is still a superstar of science．
