As population increased in large cities in the 19th century, building subway lines was a way to move people from one area of a city to another quickly. The first main subway system, the London Underground, started in 1863 using steam trains.Subway developed quickly in London and the system then had more lines. As of 1896, it strated to use an electrical system.Today's subways around the world now work on electricity.

Two of the world's earliest subways were built in Paris and New York. When the Paris Metro opened on July 19,1900 citizens were pround of the beautifully decorated station entrances that have been a landmark ever since.Although the first New York subway consisted of only 14.6 kilometers of track in 1904, today it is the world's largest subway system.

Subway trains run in tunnels dug far below the ground.Passengers enter the stations and then take lifts or moving stairs to get on the trains. The deep underground stations of the London and Moscow subways served as safe bomb shelters(防空洞)during World War Ⅱ.Today some cities are building new subways and they dig deep for a different reason. In Athens, Greece, for exmple, the city planners don't want to damage the ancient monument(纪念碑)above the ground.

Today, subways are still popular with passengers. The Moscow subway is the busiest in the world with 3.2 billion riders a year.Close behind are subways in Tokyo(2.7billion), Soul(1.6billion), and Mexico City(1.3billion).Systems that got started early in London, New York and Paris transport millions of riders, and so do subways in Osaka, Hong Kong, and St.Petersburg.

When you cough or sneeze, you’d better turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, “Excuse me.”

This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs(细菌)along to everything and everyone they touch.

If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass.

After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and think others. Once they’ve been told, they’re halfway there.

When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are going to enter a lift, the underground, of a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before we enter.

After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was in the subways. I was even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places, people made effort to make way for others. On moving stairs, everyone stood to the right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side and allow others to exit before they would begin to enter.

A. doctor                   B. traveler                  C. parent                         D. teacher

4.The passage is mainly about _________.

New York City is a very large city with 8 million people. How do so many people move on their way to work and school?

In New York you can travel by subways, bus, taxi and private (私人的) car. The subway runs on the railroad lines under the city. It crosses the city at different points and goes to all parts of the city. Travelling by subway is the fastest way to get around the city.

The second way to travel is by bus. It is a slower way to travel.

You can also travel by taxi. This is very expensive, but the taxi will take you to every place you want to go to. If traffic is heavy, the taxi will be slow. During the mornings and afternoons, there is the “rush hour”. This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work.

The last way is to use your private car. It’s not good to drive during the “rush hour”. If there is an accident on the road, you will have to wait for a long time.

The best time to travel is from 9 a.m to 4.pm . Traffic will be less crowded during this time because most people are already at school or at work at that time.

1.How many ways of travelling are mentioned (提到) in the passage?

A.Two              B.Three            C.Four             D.Five

2.The word “rush hour” in Chinese means _____________.

3.The fastest way to travel in New York City is ________________.

4.From the last paragraph we know that in New York City ____________.

A.there is no “rush hour” from 9.am to 4 p.m.

B.traffic is heavy at noon.

C.most Americans have lunch at home.

D.people go to work and school at 9:00.

5.Why do so many people go to work or school by subway, taxi, bus and private car?

A.Because New York City is a modern city.

B.Because New York City is a very large city.

C.Because New York City is new.

D.Because the people in New York City are very busy.

The world's first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way
to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that
it was almost impossible for horse carriages (the taxis of those days) to get around. The city officials were
interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day.
If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from work, they would move
their homes outside of the city. This would help solve the problem of too many people living in the poor parts
of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the first track was opened
in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers (3.7
miles) long. About 30 000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats
(standing up while the train was moving was not allowed) and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars.
However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot, as well as chemical
gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its
problems, riding the Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.
Modem subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground. Today there are
94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world. The busiest of these subway systems is the
Tokyo Metro which opened in 1927. This efficient subway has two billion riders per year, and "pushers" work
on the platforms (站台) during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times, subway cars have
been packed with up to 300 people! Shopping malls built in high traffic stations where riders move from one
train to another have also helped the popularity of subways in Tokyo. Many stations include underground
department stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and specialty shops. Shoppers never have to go above ground!
1. What problems led the British govemment to build the London Underground?
A. Pollution and overcrowding.
B. Traffic jams and pollution.
C. Overcrowding and traffic jams.
D. The subway problems.
2. The last paragraph is mainly about _____.
A. the London Underground today
B. the Tokyo subway
C. subways around the world
D. problems with subways
3. What is probably the best title for this passage?
A. The Subway Nowadays
B. The Popularity of the Subway
C. The First Subway
D. Subway Then and Now
