Sometimes people come into your life and you know at once that they were sure to be there. They serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will affect your life in some serious ways.
Sometimes things happen to you. At the time they may seem terrible, painful (痛苦的) and unfair. But later you realize that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your further ability and strength. Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people you meet affect your life, and the successes and failure (失败) you experience, create who you are. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.
Enjoy every day even every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talks to people you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.
You can make your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it.

Our spiritual intelligence quotient, SQ (精神智商)helps us understand ourselves and live fuller, happier lives.
While we’re all born with SQ, most of us even don’t know that we have it. Luckily, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to enhance(加强) your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding:
Sit Quietly. The step of developing SQ begins in solitude (独处) and silence. To tune in to its whisper, you have to keep away from your busy, noisy, complicated life and make yourself do nothing at all. At home, for example, shut the door of your bedroom, take a few deep breaths and let them out very, very slowly.
Step Outside. For many people, nature makes their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. Follow the flight of a bird; watch clouds floating overhead.
Find An Activity You Enjoy. It’s important to find a hobby that helps you tune in to your spirit. Garden, walk or jog, arrange flowers, listen to music that touches your soul.
Ask Questions Of Yourself. Some people use their thoughtful time to focus on scriptures (经文). Others ask open-ended (无确定答案的) questions, such as “What am I feeling? What are my choices?” But don’t expect an answer to arrive through some super-natural form of e-mail. Later that day you’ll suddenly find yourself thinking about a problem from a perspective (角度) you never considered before.
Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut feelings (直觉) to warn us of danger, SQ usually nudges (渐渐推动) us, not away from, but toward some action that will lead to a greater good.
【小题1】To enhance your SQ, you should first _______________.
A.stand loneliness and silence |
B.make your life simpler and less busy |
C.give up the daily things in your life |
D.listen more to your whisper |
A.get your spirit relaxed | B.keep up your spirit |
C.listen to your spirit | D.change your spirit |
A.People will lead to a greater good. |
B.People will think about a problem in a different way. |
C.People will expect answers through e-mails. |
D.People will keep away from their busy life. |
A.Advantages and disadvantages of SQ |
B.The relationship between your SQ and you |
C.What SQ is and in what ways it can be improved |
D.What SQ is and in what ways you can make your life easier |

Parents are a child’s first teachers. But some parents never learned from good examples. In New York City, Covenant House tries to help homeless young mothers become good parents.
The twelve or so teenagers who live at the shelter attend parenting classes four days a week. The class is called Mommy and Me.
Teacher Delores Clemens is a mother of five and a grandmother. She teaches basic skills, like how to give a baby a bath and how to dress a baby in different seasons.
She remembers one student who learned from her mother not to pick up a crying baby. The mother said that would only make the child needy.
“I said ‘That’s not true. You have to hold your baby! He is crying for a reason. If you never pick him up, he’s going to keep crying. Pick your baby up. Hug(拥抱)him! And she started to do that. They just want a little hugging and a little love. And it works!” Delores Clemens said.
Delores Clemens says her students also learn how to be good mothers by letting themselves be mothered. “I’m doing something for them that never has been done for them before.”
In class, with her baby son, is Natasha. She lived on the streets. She is glad not only for the warmth and shelter of Covenant House. As she told reporter Adam Phillips, she is also glad for the help they offer in looking for a safer life.
“Did you go to high school?”
“Yes.”
“Did you graduate?”
“No, I didn’t. I was in my last year and then, I got pregnant(怀孕)and I got lazy.”
“You look like you are willing to accept responsibility(责任)for that.”
“Yes, I am, and I would like to finish.”
Some teenage mothers wish they themselves could be children again. 18-year-old Placida knows that feeling. “Because you have to get up every two hours in the middle of the night, and you can’t go out and say ‘I am going to buy this for myself.’ No. I have to buy pampers, clothes and food. So now it’s two. So it’s very hard.” Placida said.
1.What did Natasha want to finish high school for?
A.To bring her high school life to an end.
B.To accept the responsibility to look after her baby.
C.To stop the chatting with Adam.
D.To end the relationship with her boyfriend.
2.From what Placida said, we know that she thinks _______.
A.looking after a baby needs love
B.having a baby costs more
C.being a mom is hard
D.loving comes from responsibility
3.The passage is mainly about _______.
A.a class where teen parents are looked after
B.a class where parents are teaching their children
C.a class where homeless mothers learn to find a job
D.a class where teens learn mothering and are mothered
