Her father，a cook，took her to the kitchen．He filled three pots（锅）with water and put each on a high fire．In one pot he put carrots，in the second pot eggs，and in the last coffee；then he let them boil．He just waited，without saying a word．

"Carrots，eggs，and coffee．"she replied．
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots，break the eggs and taste the coffee after boiling．"What does it mean，father？"she asked．
He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity（逆境），boiling water，but each had a different result．The carrots went soft，the eggs became hard，and the coffee changed the water．
"Which are you？"he asked his daughter．
