Before cars were invented (发明) ,only horses and buggies (轻便马车) travelled on the roads. Sometimes the horses went fast, but soon they would become tired. The animals usually walked slowly, and there were only a few buggy crashes. However, everything changed when cars appeared (出现) .The fast cars and slow buggies sometimes crashed into each other. One day in 1916,Garret A. Morgan,an American inventor saw a terrible accident. He decided to build something to make the streets safer.
Morgan's new traffic signal (信号) was a T-shaped pole (T型柱) with three signs. It had a stop sign,a go sign, and a walk sign. When the people driving cars and buggies saw a stop sign, they had to wait for others to cross in front of them. When they saw a go sign, cars and buggies could continue forward while others waited. The third sign stopped all traffic so people could safely walk across the street. Traffic signals worked very well, and soon they appeared on streets all across the United States.
