    Fred Hollows was born in New Zealand and became an eye doctor．He believed that all people，rich and poor，should have good medical treatment． After he began working as an eye doctor in Australia，he learned that many Aboriginal（土著的） Australians had eye disease because of dirty environment and bad health．He set up a program to help people take care of their eyes．Because of his work，many Aboriginal people could see again and fewer Aboriginal people became blind．Later，Fred Hollows learned blindness was also a big problem in Africa．Many people in Africa needed small eye Surgical operation（外科手术） to cure（治愈） their blindness．The cost of this surgery was only twenty-five dollars．But that is a lot of money to a poor person in Africa．There were also no doctors to help．Fred Hollows wanted to help the people in Africa．But he couldn't go to Africa because he had become sick．So he started the Fred Hollows Foundation．This foundation collected donations from people in rich countries．This money provided equipment for eye surgeries and helped to train doctors．The foundation helped thousands of people to see again．Unfortunately，Fred Hollows died before the foundation began its wonderful work in Africa and then other countries．Now the foundation helps save the eyesight（视力） of poor people all over the world．Even after his death，Fred Hollows is still helping people．He is a true hero．

    8．Look around and you'll see people busy on their smartphones．Smartphones do make our lives much easier than before．But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes？
    According to a study，half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average （平均） of two hours a day using them．There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the U．K．who are shortsighted after smartphones were introduced there in 1997．
    Looking at smartphones for a long time gives you dry eyes．When looking at something in the distance，your eyes automatically blink （自动眨眼） a certain number of times．However，when you look at things closer to your face，the blinking slows down．This causes discomfort in your
    eyes．Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep．If you look at a bright screen while your pupils （ 瞳孔） become larger，too much light enters your eyes．This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma （青光眼）．
    While you're probably not going to stop using your smartphone，there are several things you can do to protect your eyes．Hold your phone at least 30centimeters away from your eyes when using it．Take a break every hour and try the following：look at something at least five meters from you and then try to look at your nose．Repeat this several times．It should make your eyes more comfortable．So please remember to use your smartphones in a proper way．
