    Education in the USA

    Most Americans start to school at the age of five when they enter kindergarten(幼儿园).Children do not really study at this time. They only attend for half the day and learn what school is like.

    Children attend elementary school(小学) for the next six years. They learn to read and write and work with numbers. They also study the world and its people.

    After they leave elementary school, children go to junior high school for three years and senior high school (高中) for another three years. This is called secondary education (中等教育). In some places, the children go to elementary school for eight years and high school for four. In all, elementary and secondary education together take twelve years to complete (完全) excluding(不包括) kindergarten.

    Red Ribbon Week is held every year, usually during the last week of October. It started with a police officer named “Kiki” Camarena. He was sent to Mexico in order to investigate(调查) a Mexican drug company and stayed there for four and a half years. His efforts helped put a stop to several major drug making companies. So the bosses wanted to murder the men who brought them down.     Shortly after his death, people in Camarena’s town began wearing red ribbons in his honor. Then Camarena’s high school friend, Henry Lozano, started Camarena Club. Now, at the end of every October, millions of Americans wear red ribbons in memory of “Kiki” Camarena. So, in 1988, the first national Red Ribbon Week was founded in America.
    Red Ribbon Week has become the largest drug education and prevention organization in theUnited States. It encourages communities to stand up against drugs and it encourages children to make a promise not to take drugs in their life.

    Many Chinese students think American students enjoy more freedom than them at school. In fact, American schools also have their rules.
