Chopsticks are usually made of wood or bamboo. For more than3£¬ 000 years, the Chinese have been using these tools for their everyday meals.

But chopsticks are not the easiest tool to use when eating. So you may wonder why the Chinese invented them.

A long time ago£¬there was a very talented (ÓвÅÄܵÄ)young man named Yu. He was ordered to tame(ÖÆ·þ)a flood. During that period,Yu spent all his waking hours thinking about how to solve the problem. One day,Yu got very hungry while considering the problem on the way. So he built a fire and cooked some meat. When the food was ready, he tried to pick it up with his hands. But he could not because it was still very hot. Not wanting to waste any more time to wait for the food to cool down£¬he cut two small tree branches(Ê÷Ö¦) and used them to pick up the meat. Later on,other people copied Yu's idea. It was how chopsticks became part of the Chinese culture all those years ago.

In history, Yu was a legendary character.

That means we do not know if he actually made the first pair of chopsticks. But nothing can change the fact that the Chinese have been using chopsticks for a very long time. They even introduced the tools to Japan£¬Korea£¬and other countries nearby.
