No school, no homework, travel on the sea, have adventures all the time. Sounds interesting? That may be a pirate’s (海盗) life in movies. But what do pirates do in real life?
Pirates are robbers (强盗) on the water. As long as there has been trade on the sea, there have been pirates.
Vikings (维京人) were early pirates in Northern Europe from the 8th to the 11th century. They were strong and good at fighting. From 1650 to 1720, there were many famous and scary pirates such as Blackbeard (his real name was Edward Teach) and Jack Rackham
In Eastern Asia, Japanese pirates were common in the 13th and 14th centuries. Pirates today, such as the Somali pirates, have a bad reputation (名声). They rob ships and catch people to ask for more money.
海盗已经成为流行文化的一部分。In the story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook is scary but acts like a gentleman. He is famous for wearing a hook (钩子) and a big hat with a feather (羽毛). The Disney movies made people more interested in pirates. There is even an international festival called Talk Like a Pirate Day. People around the world celebrate this festival on September 19 each year.

At the age of five, Andrea Peterson was saved from a fire in her family’s Los Angeles home. “I thought it was a great adventure.” she says, “1 told the big firefighters that I wanted to be a fireman, too, and they laughed and said that little girls could not do that.”
Pressured by her parents to choose a good job which is fit for a girl, Peterson became a flight attendant. It wasn’t until four years ago, after her husband passed away, that she finally started volunteering at a local fire station. At more than one hundred pounds, she spent a year lifting weights and watching her diet. Later when she began training alongside men in their teens and 20S, she was ready. “At one point the department’s fitness officer asked me to pull him through the station with full gear (装备) and equipment- he weighed about 300 pounds, she says, “I did as he ordered, which perhaps surprised both of us!” Last year she graduated, becoming the only woman of the department’s staff of twenty-seven firefighters.
Peterson has now answered more than 350 emergency calls, helping so many people beat back fires in high temperatures. She says, “I’ve always known that this is the job for me. It doesn’t matter how hard I had to work or how long I had to wait.”

People are so busy these days that many people have no time to cook. This becomes a problem, because most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together. In some families, meals are often the only times everyone sees one another at the same time.
Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is often a way of showing love. A parent who makes some cookies is not just satisfying (满足) a child’s sweet tooth. She or he is sending a message.
