My mind seems always to return to the day when I met Carl. The city bus stopped at a corner to the passengers(乘客).1 was included. After getting on the bus, I looked for a place to sit. At last, I found a seat near the back.
The passenger of the next to the one I was going for was an old man in a grey suit. Seated myself, I began to read the book I had been carrying which was Jack Kerouac's On the Road. The man in the seat next to me introduced himself by asking if I any other book like the one I was holding. When I told him I had, he seemed to become and so did I. He said he was Carl. And asked if I like jazz(爵士乐),and l told him that I didn't really listen to it and that I like rock and roll. Waiting for Carl to tell me that I listen to real music, I was shocked when he just smiled and nodded. He said, "You me of myself when I was your age. I remember how my parents hated jazz, how they couldn't see how I could listen to that terrible noise. I bet your parents say the same thing, don't they?" Now it was my to smile and nod.
As the bus took us from one side of the city to the' other, Carl and I talked about a lot of different things. The more we talked, the more amazed I became at the two of us really had in common, although we had the difference. I haven't seen him we parted, but the thought of our relationship that day never leaves my mind.

take up 从事,拿起;pick up 拾起,捡起,接某人;put up 搭建,张贴;turn up 将声音调大,出现。
mustn’t 禁止,不要;shouldn’t 不应该;must 必须;should 应该。
remember 记得,不能和后面的of 组成短语;warn sb. of sth. 警告某人某事;make 使,制作,不能和of 组成短语;remind sb. of sth.
It is one’s turn to do sth. time 时间;day 白天,日;honor 荣誉。
why 为什么;where 哪里;how 怎样。
根据上文next to the one I was going for was an old man in a grey suit可知,挨着作者的这个人是一个老人,所以作者和他之间有着年龄的差距。
after 在……之后;when 当……时候;since 自从;before在……

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投篮) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄气), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
【小题1】Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?
A.To compare these two famous persons. |
B.To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills. |
C.To show that the two persons were treated unfairly. |
D.To prove that failure is the mother of success. |
A.No one can be successful without working hard. |
B.Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way. |
C.Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help. |
D.One should try his best to make his dream come true. |
A.One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him. |
B.One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with. |
C.One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times. |
D.One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him. |

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who has wings of their own and who will fly with me.
When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say, “Let’s start with a train whistle(鸣笛)today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social persons and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair(失望)and I was in despair, too. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not travel over this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.
For almost four years I have had a great friend whose imagination brightens mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind.
It is such comforting companions(陪伴)I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be with my own best friend.
1.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that the writer ______ finally.
A. wasn’t serious about her studies
B. didn’t like writing poems or stories
C. became popular with her classmates
D. developed her proper social behaviors
2.The underlined sentence “We gave London to each other” probably means ______.
A. our tour in London was a memorable gift to both of us
B. our unpleasant feeling about London disappeared
C. we were unwilling to stay away from London
D. we waved goodbye to each other in London
3.What is the best title for the passage?
A. Unforgettable Experiences.
B. Unbelievable Imagination.
C. Touching Companions.
D. Lifelong Friendship.

One of sweetest memories as a child is of going down to the river and sitting comfortably on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to songs of birds. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under the pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original state after the wind had died down.
When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bend and move back, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When it is used for a person, this word means the ability to readily recover(恢复) from shock, sadness or any other suffering. Have you ever felt like you were going to snap? Have you ever felt like you were at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived to talk about it.
Life is a mixture(混合) of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
An amount of hope will take you through the unpleasant suffering. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem. The unpleasant suffering may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.
If things get tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!
1.What does the word “snap” in the second paragraph most probably mean?
A. break B. change
C. win D. Complain
2.What can help people get through sufferings according to the writer?
A. Holding peace and quiet in mind. B. Waiting until sufferings disappear.
C. Experiencing more bad times. D. Hoping for a better tomorrow.
