    1. One hundred years ago my grandmother started school. She was seven, and she went to twenty schools until she reached Year Three at age of go to school any longer.

    2. Grandmother usually walked to school, together with her brother and sister. Sometimes they walked about seven kilometers from home to school, and the same distance back home, in hot sun and in pouring rain. When they were at a school at Illford, there was a mountain between the school and their home in a railway workers’ camp, so to get to school they had to climb the mountain first!

    3. The family was poor and the children usually did not were shoes to school for most of the year, except on the coldest days of the winter.

    4. Grandmother’s schools didn’t always run for five days a week. She went to the half-time school. A teacher shared his time between a small school and another small school not more than a half day’s ride away.

    5. The lunches my grandmother took to school were not much like your lunches. There  wasn’t any juice or chips. There weren’t even any sandwiches. They took whatever could be soared from home. Sometimes this was a leftover potato, a piece of homemade bread or a piece of cold mutton.
