Letter A
Dear Rose,
I like your programs very much. I'm now writing to ask you something about American social customs. My American friends want me to join them in their dinner party. I am very happy arid have decided to go but I'm a little worried about it, too. The social customs in my country are very different from here, and I know little about American ones.
Should I bring a present, such as sweets or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I use the fork and knife? How can I let the family know that I'm thankful for their kindness?
Wang Lin
Letter B
Dear Wang Lin,
It's a good idea to bring a small present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of wine if you know that your friends drink it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don't get there early. If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them. Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know how to use the fork and knife, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, ask the person next to you.
If you like the food, say so. Of course, you'll thank them for the meal and for their kindness. It's also a good idea to send a thank you card the clay after.
Rose

C.Follow others to use the fork and knife.
D.Thank your friends for the meal.
4.From the letters we've learned that it's very ________ to know something about American social customs.
[ ]
Flowers are always nice,or you may bring a bottle of wine if you know that your friends drink it.可知,在美国赴宴时把花作为礼物总是好事.如果你知道朋友喝酒才可以带酒,其言外之意就是如果你不知道朋友是否喝酒,对带什么礼品没有把握时,就最好带上花.) 3.A(正误判断题.根据Rose在回信中所陈述的在美国赴宴时的社交习惯,如Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know how to use the fork and knife, just watch the other people, and follow them.和…you'll thank them for the meal and for their kindness.可以看出,B、C、D项符合社交习惯.根据Letter B中,Rose在回信第二段中所说的You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late.Don't get there early. |

“You're just in time, Joe. We're going to play Cowboys(牛仔)-and-Indians, and you can be the Indians.” one of my cousins (堂兄弟)said.
“How many Indians?” I asked.
“Oh, about a thousand.” he answered, and before I could say no, I was pushed out into the night and became a thousand Indians. Two minutes later I was running in the fields with a group of cowboys behind. The shouts of “After them. “Only Indians burn people. Cowboys...” I stopped just in time. I had almost said, “Cowboys hang (绞死) people.”
I was tied to a tree, and the cowboys were looking for some wood when my dear mother called, “We're leaving now.”
“Untie me!” I shouted. “We're going.”
“Why did Bobby want matches (火柴)?” Mum asked when we were in the car. “He was asking Dad whether he had any.”
“Oh, he was just going to - matches? MATCHES? Are you sure he wanted matches?”
Mother was quite sure, and I didn't say more.
