After Peter, the Secretary of the Swedish Academy, announced in Stockholm on Thursday, "Chinese writer Mo Yan won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature(文学)”,Mo Yan became well-known to us. The awarding ceremony was held on December 10th. A medal,a personal diploma(证书),a cash award of 8 million Swedish kronor ( about 1 million U. S dollars) were given to the winner.
Mo Yan was born in Gaomi in Shandong Province in eastern China in 1955. He spent his childhood there. He left school at the age of 12. First he worked as a farmer like his parents, later as a worker in a factory. After he joined the People's Liberation Army in 1976 ,he began to study literature and write articles. His first short story came out in 1981. Mo Yan described the experiences during his childhood and the cultures in his birthplace in his writing. His novel HongGaoliangJiazu(1987 ,RedSorghum 1993 in English) ,which was made up of five stories,was filmed successfully in 1987. Besides his novels, Mo Yan has also written many short stories and passages on many different topics. A number of his stories have been translated into English,French,Japanese and many other languages.
Mo Yan not only brings a great surprise to the world but also a great pride to China.
