¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿In the United States, sometimes when one becomes rich, he wants everyone to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what ¡°keeping up with the Joneses¡± is about. It is a story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23, and that was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw rich people riding horses, Momand went horse-riding every day. When he saw that the rich had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because another one was always trying to keep up. The race ended when Momand and his wife finally found that they could no longer pay for their new way of life and had to move back to an old apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do such things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series£¨ÏµÁУ©of short novels, and he called it ¡°Keeping up with the Joneses¡± because ¡°Jones¡± is a very common name in the United States. ¡°Keeping up with the Joneses¡± came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Since then, Momand¡¯s series came out in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem, to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are ¡°Joneses¡± in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what he does, a Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

A. want to be as rich as their neighbors B. want others to know or to think that they are rich

¡¾2¡¿It can be inferred£¨ÍƲ⣩from the story that rich people like to __________.

A. go horse-riding with neighbors B. live inside New York City

C. compare with others D. give big parties for servants

¡¾3¡¿Arthur Momand used the name ¡°Jones¡± in his series of novels because ¡°Jones¡± is __________.

A. an important name to Mr. Momand B. not a good name to Americans

C. Mr. Momand¡¯s neighbor¡¯s name D. a popular name in the United States

¡¾4¡¿The underlined sentence in the last paragraph£¨¶ÎÂ䣩tells us that __________.

A. keeping up with Joneses helps you to know what you¡¯re able to do

B. according to the writer, it is impossible to keep up with the Joneses

What will happen if a family is without the Internet for a month? One ¡¾1¡¿(America) family decided to find out, so they sent an ¡¾2¡¿(invite) to a leading US television station, expecting that it would send a film group to record their everyday life without technology for a month.

When the film group met ¡¾3¡¿Smiths, they noticed that Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith and their two sons were so crazy about technology ¡¾4¡¿theyhardly did things together. At mealtimes, no one was prepared ¡¾5¡¿ (sit) at the dining table for their food. ¡°Everyone just runs into the kitchen, takes their food and then goes back to their bedrooms and then their eyes are fixed ¡¾6¡¿ their screen.¡±Mrs. Smith explained. ¡°Our family will become strangers to each other ¡¾7¡¿we make a change!¡±

Returning to the normal life without the Internet was not easy, especially when all the family members lost¡¾8¡¿(they) in it. They had to make many changes. For example, the two brothers had to go to the school library to borrow books for their scientific projects, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith needed to go out shopping because they couldn¡¯t buy things online. Since the family picked up the new lifestyle, they ¡¾9¡¿(find) that they can spend more time talking over meals instead of doing their own things ¡¾10¡¿(silent).

Would they be able to go for long without using the Internet after the challenge?

As we all know, Jiaozi is a kind of traditional Chinese food, with a history of around 1,800 years. Do you know how it was invented?

It¡¯s said that jiaozi was invented by the ¡°Medicine Saint¡± ¡¾1¡¿ Zhang Zhongjing. He was known for excellent medical skills. One day, Zhang Zhongjing saw some poor people whose ears were frostbitten(¶³É˵Ä). To help them treat frostbitten ears, Zhang thought of an ¡¾2¡¿. First, he boiled some mutton, pepper and warming medicines in a pot. Then he cut them into pieces and filled small dough wrappers(ÃæÍŰü×°) with them. After¡¾3¡¿, he folded the dough wrappers into the shape of an ear and boiled them in water before giving them to the poor. The food was not only delicious but also good for people¡¯s health, so it became¡¾4¡¿ among people quickly.

I love the delicious food very much and I hope you can ¡¾5¡¿ about it through my description.
