    20．Ever since she was a child，Harris has thought that she is quiet and shy．Some people may mistakenly think that Harris is unfriendly．But it just takes time to get to know her．Harris'classmates know she is a caring friend and a great listener．Her closest friends know even more about her---she is a good pianist who writes her own music．
    Shyness is a feeling that influences a person to feel and behave around others．Shyness can mean feeling uncomfortable，nervous or unconfident．When people feel shy，they might be unwilling to say or do something because they're not sure of themselves and they're not ready to be noticed．
    Shyness is partly a result of a person's genes（基因）．About 20% of people are naturally shy because of their genes．The examples that other people set can also play a role in whether a person learns to be shy or not．If the parents of a shy child are too careful or protect him or her too much，it can teach the child to back away from where he or she feels uncomfortable．
    Many people want to become less shy．But people who are naturally shy also have gifts（天赋） that they might not fully realize themselves．For example，because shy people may prefer listening to talking，they sometimes are really good listeners．People who are shy might become sensitive（敏感） to other people's feelings．Because of their sensitivity and listening skills，many people who are shy are especially caring toward others．People often consider them the finest friends．
    If you are trying to become less shy，the following can help you．
    Getting over shyness takes practice．People who are shy often given themselves fewer chances to practice social（社交）behaviors．Practicing social skills can help people get over shyness．The more you practice social behaviors，the easier they get，and the more natural they feel for you．
