     Chen Yan has been restless since he learned a 7.3-magnitude earthquake happened in Haiti. Several
hours later, a friend in the National Earthquake Disaster Relief Team called, telling him about the terrible
aftermath (创伤) of the quake in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince (太子港) .
     He collected his packs and booked an air ticket for Beijing on the afternoon of Jan 13th with the
intention of going with the National Earthquake Disaster Relief Team. After he hurried to the airport in
Chengdu, he was told by the NEDRT that he could not go with them because he was not on its payroll
(雇员名单). That night he called a famous Beijing-based foundation asking whether it could help him go
to Haiti. As China has not established diplomatic relations (外交关系) with Haiti, members of the
foundation cannot go to Haiti. Neither could it help him go there.
     On the afternoon of Jan 14th, members of the NEDRT arrived in Haiti. One member called Chen and
told him the country was in a deplorable  (糟透的) condition. Most of the houses in  Port-au-Prince had
collapsed (坍塌). Although all the peacekeepers were involved in the rescue operation, it proved
ineffective because of the lack of equipment. Only one hospital still operated and people were scared.

      * Dress smartly.  This will give you confidence.
      * Once you are up on stage,  pick out the most friendly face in the audience.  Look into the person's
eyes from time to time and speak as if you are talking directly to that person.
        * Write down the key points of your speech on small cards.  But don't hold your notes in your
hand.  Put them on a table near you instead.
        * If you are trembling,  stand against a table or move your legs and move about a little.
