Millions of Chinese students started online learning on Monday, as the new school term originally scheduled for Feb. 17 is now put off because of a nationwide epidemic control mechanism (疫情管控机制).

Primary and middle schools are required to open online courses to make sure that 180 million students “are occupied with the guided study at home”.

Zhang Ziqing, a 14-year-old girl living in Beijing, turns on her computer at home at 8:00 every morning and begins her “online school study”.

“We communicate with teachers through an online communication platform called Ding Talk. In each lesson, our teacher takes 15 minutes to guide us on how to study online. Then we start our self-study with the instructions.” says the Grade-8 student, “I think taking online courses is brilliant. It gives me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to learn whatever we want.”

But Li Jun from Henan isn’t quite sure about that. “I find it hard for me to focus (专注) on study because there are lots of distractions (使人分心之事) . My mom likes to offer me snacks and drinks, which sometimes distracts me from listening during my classes. Talking with classmates online also takes me so much time that I may even fail to finish my homework on time.”
