British newspapers are much smaller than they used to be and their readers are often in a hurry, so newspapermen write as few words as possible. They tell their readers at once what happened, where, when and how it happened and what was the result: how many people were killed, what damage was done, which famous man married which woman , who did very well in the match and so on. Readers want the fact set out as fully and accurately as possible. Readers are also interested in the people who have seen the accdient. So a newspaperman always likes to get some information from someone who was there, which can be given in the person’s own words. Because he can use only a few words, the newspaperman must choose those words carefully, every one must be effective. Instead of “he called out in a loud voice”, he writes “he shouted”; instead of “the loose stones rolled noisily down the side of the mountain”, he will write “they thundered down the mountainside”. In ancient languages, the seven days of the week were named after the sun, the moon, and the five planets that ancient people knew about (luckily, they only knew about five planets then, or our weeks would be much longer). There is a good reason that in English “Sunday” has the word “sun” in it. Sunday seems to be everyone’s favorite day of the week. It makes sense that it’s named after everyone’s favorite thing in the sky! Do any other weekday names sound like astrological (占星的) words? How about “Monday” and “Moon”, or “Saturday” and “Saturn”?

If you learn French or Spanish, you will see even more planets in the names of the days of the week. These languages are rooted in Latin(拉丁文) and the Latin names match the planet names for all seven days.

English is a strange language. It is very confusing. The days of the week are a perfect example of this confusion. A few are from Latin, and a few are from German. “Tuesday” is named after a German God: Tiw (Tiw’s day). Friday is named after a German Goddess(女神): Freya. English words change spelling, meaning and roots that are based on wars and kings. That’s why English is so hard to learn! Learning the names of the week can be like a history lesson in itself!

46. Which day of the week was named after the moon?

A. Sunday B. Monday C. Saturday D. Tuesday

47. We can tell from the story that “Saturn” is _______.

A. a planet’s name B. a strange language C. a God’s name D. a Goddess’ name

48. The underlined words “everyone’s favorite thing” in Paragraph 2 refers to _______.

A. Monday B. Sunday C. the moon D. the sun

49. Which day is from German? A. Sunday B. Monday C. Tuesday D. Saturday

50. The story mainly tells us ________.

A. what the seven days of the week are named after

B. how the English language changes

C. Why there are seven days in a week

D. Which day of the week is people’s favorite
