     I've 1ived my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing
letters.Standing by the chair, looking at the ink, bottle, pen and white paper, I decided that the act of writing

    When I was twelve years old, my family were the first black people to move into an all white part of Grand
Rapids, Michigan. Many of our new neighbors weren't very welcoming. Some of them said angrily that we
