(1)The half-empty coffee cups, still standing next to their plates, tell of a morning like others. And yet, that grey covering of dust that everything wears tells a different story: it tells of screams, tears, confusion, terror and blood.
(2)Now the restaurant in the World Trade Center will never again serve breakfast. And never again will all those people go there to eat or work --- those people of America whose faces have entered our hearts. So many people whose faces we associate with life and liveliness _______ tonight. So many words remain unsaid, and so much happiness has been destroyed. In their places are tear-stained faces. My generation has seen this. On Monday, a fight with my sister and a bad grade seemed to be the biggest problems in the world. Tonight, so many people across the country know that America’s pain is at its worst ever. We have read about World War II, and we have seen the black-and-white pictures. But to most students, that’s an event on a textbook page that would never happen today.
(3) After all, this was a time of peace and wealth --- the United States was powerful and successful. There would be no more wars, and we were lucky to live in such a time. But when those planes hit; when firefighters with terror on their faces ran among the parts of the buildings that had fallen; when people screamed for their family members; when history was unfolding before our eyes, in full, clear colour ---- then we knew the world had been changed.
(4) Everything that had happened in the past seemed to take on new life through September 11, 2001. And when they say this is the worst wound in American soil, I say, I thought this place was an empire. And I say, I thought this was a time of peace. And I say, I thought we were safe.
(5) Knowing how many human beings turned to ashes in a second, and seeing some jumps from the buildings, I know that my generation is growing up in a world where mankind can still be evil. But seeing those heroes risk lives among the castle-like ruins, and seeing the eager blood donors at the hospitals, my generation has learned that tears are allowed, that mankind can also be beautiful, and that the ghost of evil will never defeat the spirit of good.
1.Why was the passage written? (no more than 7 words)

3.What does the underlined word “it” refer to? (no more than 8 words)
4.Fill in the blank with proper words. (no more than 3 words)
5.What event of the past did September 11 remind the writer of? (no more than 5 words)
1.In honor of September 11 attack.
2.The heroes risking lives among the ruins; the eager blood donors at the hospital
3.The grey covering of dust that everything wears
4.are gone
5.World War II
最后一段seeing those heroes risk lives among the castle-like ruins, and seeing the eager blood donors at the hospitals可知,作者看到那些英雄们冒着生命危险在废墟中展开营救行动,看到在医院里络绎不绝的献血者时,作者相信这个世界仍然是美好的。
And yet, that grey covering of dust that everything wears tells a different story: it tells of screams, tears, confusion, terror and blood.
So many words remain unsaid, and so much happiness has been destroyed. 故填are gone.
5.第二段We have read about World War II, and we have seen the black-and-white pictures.

[1]A researcher who helped make crops grow in dry land areas received the World Food Prize last week. Daniel Hillel was recognized for his work in developing what is called “micro-irrigation" or “drip irrigation." It has made farming possible in places where there is little rainfall or water.
[2]Daniel Hillel's farm near his home in Israel shows his ideas at work. “Each tree row is fed by these plastic tubes that drip water at the base of the tree." Watering plants drop by drop has changed agriculture by reducing the amount of water needed to grow crops.
[3]Farmers now depend on drip irrigation in many areas, including vineyards in Spain, onion fields in Africa, and even farms in the United States. Farmers in California grow about fifty percent of the fruits and vegetables of the continental United States. And the reason that is possible is because of these drip and micro-irrigation techniques.
[4]Daniel Hillel was born in California. After his father died, his mother moved the family to Palestine, where her parents lived. The area eventually became part of the state of Israel. Daniel Hillel got his start in dry land farming as a settler in Israel's Negev Desert in the 1950s. “The issue was efficient use of water because land is available and extensive while Water is limited."
[5]Desert farmers were not able to push water through irrigation canals to their crops the way farmers have since ancient times. So Mr. Hillel and others gave plants just what they needed, just where they needed it. The idea was to apply the water little by little. [1] In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most people like traveling by car or by air. Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train. Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers has increased, it is still very small now. In countries such as France, Germany, or Japan, more people use trains. There are several reasons why many people ________________________.
[2] Firstly, Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains. These highways connect all major cities in America.Secondly, many travelers like to be independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel. In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, travel from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing.
